A Little Bit About Me

I'm Beverly Kappenman and I am an accumulator. I'm married to a wonderful man who used to be anti-collecting.

The story of OUR black glass collecting: Some years ago we were living near Chicago. We saw a pair of Mt. Pleasant black glass double candleholders that we thought would look nice on our new kitchen hutch. Then we saw a black candy dish. I bought a book on Black Glass. We started going to the flea markets and antique malls that abound in Illinois. End result - we went over the deep end collecting black glass! Why BLACK? We figured we wouldn't have to do a lot of research on patterns, companies, etc. We thought we wouldn't be endlessly searching for an elusive piece to finish a set. Besides, with Black Glass you don't have to worry about the shade of black. We've stuck with it because Husband (the previous non collector) WILL search for black glass. He can get in and out of a large antique mall in 20 minutes (30 min. if he buys anything) because he only looks at black glass. He does keep me focused.

The story of MY other collection - Books on Glass: Yes, I know I just said that we wouldn't have to do a lot of research. Well we didn't have to, but it turns out I enjoy it. I enjoy the research ALMOST as much as the actual hunt for the glass. So I'm accumulating shelves of books on glass.

A Little Bit About This Website

Why did I do this website? First I enjoy computers. I always have a crick in my neck. Then, in my glass research I discovered sources of information written by other people. Much was written 30- 50 years ago and much is being written today. To these authors, I owe a debt that in some small way is being repaid by this web site. Also, I have met other glass collectors in person, by mail and online. I want to share information with my friends and a web site seemed a good way to do it. Finally there are the purely selfish reasons - hoping someone will ID a piece for me, hoping that I'm offered special pieces, hoping that I can get rid of some of my duplicates. Hope springs eternal for a collector.

My goals for this website are:

  1. Legibility and common page layout
The layout of each page is similar. If pages are frequently changed, the revision date is at the top of the page. On pages where the content does not frequentl change, the revision date is at the foot. The foot of each page has links to "HOME" and the "SITE MAP". The foot also has my email address.
  2. Aid to help you know what page you are on
I have used different colors for the headings of the various pages. This might create problems with visibility on different monitors and different browsers. Please let me know if you have serious problems with a color or font on a specific page.
  3. A common-sense layout
As the writer, I know where I am heading. Hopefully it will make sense to you - the reader. Please let me know if you have to hop, skip and jump all over the place. If after discussion, my common-sense viewpoint still varies from your common-sense viewpoint, mine will be the winner.
  4. Accurate content
    • Glass research is a continuous study. Please let me know if you have different information than what is shown on these pages.
Finally, if there is a misspelling, please don't let me stand in front of the whole cyberspace world with my ignorance showing.
