Fabrics requirements

Please use 100% quilters quality cotton in specified colors or theme.

For each block, you will need three fabrics in different colors cut to the following sizes:

Background 9 " square Any fabric that reads as chosen background color
Large circle 8" square Any brightly colored solid or print fabric
Small circle 6" square Any other brightly colored solid or print fabric

For twenty blocks, this works out to be approximately 1 1/2 yards of background fabric, 1 yard to make the large circles and 3/4 yard to make the small cricles. This is a great project to use up fat quarters and charms from swaps.

Making the block

1. Fold the 8" square into quarters

and cut a quarter circle free hand from the folded square to produce the larger circle.

2. Do the same with the 6" square, fold into quarters and a quarter circle free hand to produce the smaller circle.

3. Center the large circle on the 9" square background and stitch around the circle, 1/4" from the raw edge.

Turn the block over and trim the background fabric from inside the circle, leaving a 1/4" seam allowance.

4. Center the small circle on the large one and stitch around the circle, 1/4" from the raw edge.

Turn the block over and trim the large circle fabric from inside the small circle, leaving a 1/4" seam allowance.

5. Press the block ... Confirm that it is 9" by 9" SQUARE and it's ready to SWAP.

Assembling the Blocks

1. Press the block ... Confirm that it is 9" by 9" SQUARE, trim if necessary.

2. Carefully cut each block into 4 equal squares, each 4 1/2 " square.

3. To create a quilt like Judy's Bubble Machine, arrange the small squares to form new bullseye units and sew together. The new bullseye blocks will be 8 1/2" (actual measurement)

4. Arrange the blocks and assemble the quilt top, adding borders, embellishments, etc.

5. Quilt as desired (don't you hate when the directions say that as if it were a trivial step?)

6. Take a picture of your quilt and send it to me to be included in the Gallery of Bullseyes!

Breaking the Rules and other Outside the Box Ideas to Consider

You don't have to quarter your blocks, you could leave them whole, or slice and dice them in any way you choose.

After you quarter (or whatever) your blocks, you don't have to use them to create new bullseyes. Think about drunkards' path or other arrangements, or combining the quarters with 4 1/2" squares of fabric or other blocks.
