The Doak / Doke Junction

"A man who doesn't know his heritage is like a tree without roots"

Did you know our Doak / Doke family's name has been spelled in many ways....all for people who were probably related. In one Kentucky cemetery, a Doak father and his son even are buried side by side with one's last name spelled 'Doak', the other's spelled 'Doke'. Sometimes three different spellings might occur within one document. Doaks / Dokes who did not read or write had their names spelled variously by county clerks. Clerks spelled names as they thought thery heard them being pronounced. A clerk's background often influenced how he spelled what he heard. Someone from England used a 'k' in spelling Doak. A clerk with a Scottish background used the 'g' which is pronounced in Scotland as our 'k' is. Someone with a German background used a 'ch' for our 'k' sound. Some more common variations found in documents in our country include Doague, Doack, Doch, Doake, Doak, Doke, Dook, Doge, Dock, Dok and even Dog. (This article was taken from the family newsletter: The Doak/Doke Junction, issued dated 31 March 1996, Volume IV).
