Hudsons in Concert - Six Flags Over Texas
June 21, 1975

Mark Hudson playing the electric pianoI was nearly 18 and too old to be screaming along with the teens and preteens. But there I was, pushed up against the Music Mill stage at Six Flags Over Texas on a warm June evening in 1975, staring up into the blue blue eyes of Mark Hudson, singing along with him on "Rendezvous." My best friend Carrie was by my side, still bleeding from her left knee. She had been shoved to the ground by the teeming (or is that teening?) masses when the gate to the concert area was opened. Brett made an "awwww" face when he saw Carrie's knee during their first show. At that point she was the only one up at the stage, and was taking photographs. Everyone got a little braver for the second show, and that is how I found myself staring into those blue eyes. I loved listening to that man sing, whether he was hard and grinding on a rock tune or sweet and melodic on a ballad. "Rendezvous" hadn't been released as a single yet, but the guys had sung it on "Cher" a month before, and Carrie and I recorded it by holding a cassette recorder up to the television. By the time the concert rolled around, we had the song memorized.

That night they sang their own tunes "Pauline," "Are You All Right," "So You Are A Star," "Rendezvous," "Apple Pie Heroes," "Three Of Us," "Strike Up the Boys in the Band," and "Ma Ma Ma Baby." Actually I was never sure if "Are You All Right" was the name of that song. Carrie and I just called it that because the final lyric was, "are you all right? Can I spend the night? Will you turn me away, like you did yesterday, like you did yesterday?" If I recall correctly, the guys sang this bit a cappela. Their gorgeous harmony sent a chill up my back. Bill also crooned the Del Shannon tune "Little Town Flirt," and the guys performed a raucous version of "House of Blue Lights." The concert included a spoof of Sonny and Cher, with the guys singing "I've Got You Babe." Mark played Sonny, Brett played "Snare," and Bill played "Custody." Brett in a wig and bikini top was hysterical. Mark's Sonny Bono impression was right on the money. The concert photos have faded somewhat (and it was only a $10.00 camera to begin with), but I'm happy to share these memories with other Hudson Brothers fans! Just remember, it's OK to say, "I liked the Hudson Brothers!"
