The Local Wood Brownie
Brownie Samuel has been quite successful foraging for herbs and mushrooms.
The local wood brownie is a shy creature of which little is known. What we do know is that they are a benevolent sort going about their lives in the deep-forested areas surrounding Ithaca. It is thought that they construct their homes of our indigenous shale and occasionally live in tree stumps. We believe that they survive by foraging mushrooms, berries, roots, and, of course, wild herbs. They most likely help themselves to farmer's corn and siphon a bit of honey now and then from a beehive. Although very rarely seen, there have been a number of sightings in the hills west of town. As they are generally just under a foot tall it's understandable that the brownies would be wary of an encounter with humans. Masters of camouflage, they can quickly change their appearance by adding pine cones, feathers, bits of moss, flowers and such to their persons. This may mean that they are more numerous than first believed since humans find it difficult to recognize them in their altered state. More the pity, a brownie going about its daily chores must be a lovely sight to behold! Come back again as there is always the chance that Samuel has relatives and friends.
