The Spiral-In Hunting Technique

A Bad Guy may well be watching the roads, therefore it is wise to collect as much information as possible before driving down the street where the person is located. The technique we recommend we call the Spiral In method.

The main idea is to NOT drive right down the "throat" of the signal. Keep the signal always off to the side, rather than straight ahead. When it becomes clear that you have passed the signal, go a little farther then turn 90° generally towards the signal. Continue this process following a spiral path which gets continually tighter. During the process, note those street addresses where the bearing is directly 90° to the left or right. A tape recorder is handy for this. Also log those addresses which produce a 45° to the front and to the rear. The navigator should be tracking progress on a city map. These loggings are most important for the streets adjacent to the one where the transmitter is located. Only after collecting this data and logging it, then drive down the street where the transmitter is. Using this technique even if the Bad Guy sees you coming down the street and stops transmitting you have already collected enough information to identify the site. You can count lots from locations M & J to the end of the street, and then count the same number to locate point P. The distance between elements of the bearing pair K&I, when compared with the distance between elements of the bearing pair L&N, indicate which side of the street he is on.

Refer to the figure, which indicates a typical grid of streets and houses, and a Spiral In route. Display Figure as a separate page. Down load as a GIF Image. Its name is SPIRAL.GIF.
