Smithers is the sober Yin to Mr. Burns's raging Yang. Mr. Burns's loyal assistant, Smithers has developed a special fondness for his boss; he is in love with Mr. Burns. Although Smithers was married at one time (to a woman), it seems at though through Mr. Burns, he was able to confront and accept the gay man within himself.
