Bob Verney's Family Ties: VERNEY / RIKER (RICKER) FAMILIES

My Family Heritage
My siblings & I are 2nd generation Verney, in America. My wife, Karen & her brother Richard, are first generation. Grandfather, Alick Esmond Verney, migrated to America in 1907, married another British immigrant, Kate Mitchell & they had 3 sons. Alick, Jr., Harry & George. Alick, Sr., eventually, became a Naturalized Citizen. Until I began this genealogy, I took for granted being born & raised in America. But, I will be forever thankful to my paternal grandparents, whom I never knew, & my wife Karen's father, Togo Andersen, of Denmark & his wife, Elizabeth Nelson, whose family migrated from Sweden. These courageous people, came to a new & strange land, & by doing so, opened so many opportunities for their future families, growing up in the United States of America. And, let me not forget my mother's Riker (Ricker) (Riccar), Demeritt (DeMerit) & Dow immigrant families, all of whom document back as early as the 1600s here, in America. They allow us to proudly say, "We have deeply embedded roots in the development & shaping of this wonderful land, America." I wish I could have shown this great compilation to my mother before she passed away, as I know of the interest she showed me early on, & I know how proud she would have been of the resulting research. My mother's assistance & meager record keeping in her early years, helped me begin the research, & I must never forget to say "thanks Mom." This voyage into genealogy, has seen my wife, Karen, & myself travel many miles to "touch" the places some of our ancestors once lived or roamed. It has all been a wonderful journey, but it is more a memorial to the lives of those who came before us, some we knew, but a greater number, whom we did not. And, lastly, this work is a legacy left to our future generations, our children & grandchildren, whom we have known & loved, so much. But also, to those who will come after we are gone, whom we will not have the pleasure or privilege of knowing. GOD continue to Bless America, and protect her from those who would try to undermine & exploit her. My hope is that, one day, our descendants will read of the lives of their ancestors, know of their struggles & achievements, experience the privileges we sometimes take for granted & feel the pride. Thanks to all our relatives who have assisted & contributed information to OUR genealogy.

My Current Research
I have been very fortunate, since 1979, when I launched into this journey called genealogy, with the help of my mother Beatrice (Riker) Verney. My father, Alick, Jr., passed away in 1971, & I began to see the depletion of our family circle, our own mortality, if you will, with no known record of their existence in history form. Thus began my motivation. I have in my possession, copies of earlier generation's genealogies, in the following books: A Genealogy of The Ricker Family, 2 Volumes; The Book of Dow Genealogy Memoirs-1929; History of Durham, NH-1913, 2 Volumes and History Montpelier, Vermont 1780-1882. These books contained pertinent Riker, Demeritt, Dow, etc., information. These, along with my own research of our affiliated Verney/Riker families, has been very time consuming, but very much rewarding also. However, more is to be done, because as with all family searches, there are vacant areas and it seems traces of some families has disappeared. It is truly said, no genealogy is ever complete, but rather continues endlessly.
I purchased, and I am quite pleased with, as my genealogy program, Brother's Keeper for Windows, a Shareware product, programmed by John Steed, Rockford, MI. Phone: 1-(616)364-5503.
