ࡱ> NPMY u;bjbjWW f==Y7]FFFFFFF8 T jj $sl F FFj HFF ZFFFF n FF N X This worksheet is designed to help you complete your Proposal Packages. (Notice the format of the Header, saved in grey.) Summary (THREE PAGES): Re-tell your story in THREE PAGES. Biography (ONE PAGE): What you want the publisher to know about you in ONE PAGE. Marketing Plan (ONE PAGE; single-spaced) : A single-spaced one-page letter to me, in which you discuss the book, others like it, your expected audience, etc. This is a personal note to me which publishers can look over my shoulders and read; they get to see you in a different light than just the bio and the text, and they get a quick view of our relationship, too. Outline of remaining chapters: While the summary retells the story quickly and PRECEDES the three chapters in the Proposal Package, this follows the three chapters, allowing the reader, now familiar with your characters and plot, to see how the rest of the tale develops. Keep this as short as possible; three bullets per chapter should be plenty. List of ten publishers to submit to: Publishers now have websites with their contact information listed. Go to the internet, and look at their sites. DO NOT CONTACT THEM, but DO do your homework. Look for publishers who have published books like yours, and who might be good candidates for me to contact. Print their homepage, and anything else you think I need to see, such as their submission guidelines, names of acquisition editors, phone numbers, and addresses, etc. When I call them for permission to send the Proposal Packages, I can write directly on these printouts and make notes. Five years ago, publishers did not have such pages; but now, I can do this, instead of working from tiny index cards. I can file these pages in your permanent file, and keep an easy record of all the contacts and info. Select ten, print them, and send them to me. When the Proposal Packages are COMPLETED, I can then submit our manuscripts to publishers. Not before. We have a deadline of September 15 for books to be submitted this season. From September 15th to October 30th, I will be calling publishers and will NOT be working on revisions of books or on finishing Proposal Packages. I WILL resume working on Proposals and on proofreading in November and December for the January 15th to March 15th season . Dont get left behind or left out. Some of you still need to contact me to let me know what your intentions are. Or you need to begin to negotiate a settlement with me about the work I have already done on your books. Ill have time in November to begin filing those cases. Dont be one of those, please. I WANT to see MY hard work in print, too. In addition to the above, each Package will include a copy of the first three chapters. Make sure I have two printed copies of the manuscript available (here) at all times. The plan is to have TEN completed Proposal Packages on hand before I start calling publishers. Be sure your package includes all of the above. And that there is sufficient postage money in your account for me to make the calls and do the mailings. I will NOT be printing the manuscripts myself. Thats YOUR job. And so, too, you must provide me with the details which they will require who you are, etc., These are quick, easy writing exercises of the type you have been seeing since the third grade. And YOU are the ONLY PERSON IN THE WORLD who can write yours. Summary (THREE PAGES) Re-tell your story in THREE PAGES. Summary Page One: Summary Page Two: Summary Page Three: Biography (ONE PAGE) What you want the publisher to know in ONE PAGE. Marketing Plan (ONE PAGE; single-spaced) A single-spaced one-page letter to me, in which you discuss your book, others like it, your expected audience, etc. A personal note to me which they can look over my shoulders and read; they get to see you in a different light than just the bio and the text. Outline of remaining chapters While the summary retells the story quickly and PRECEDES the three chapters, this outline follows the three chapters we submit, and allows the reader, now familiar with your characters and plot, to see how the rest of it develops. Three bullets or II B subheadings per chapter should be sufficient. We are trying to let the reader see how the rest of the story is laid out without his actually having to read it. He has probably forgotten most of your summary, and now is the time to re-trigger his memory -- just show him the skeleton. If and when he DOES read the rest of the book, whether he prints it himself from the enclosed CD or whether he requests that we provide a printed copy at our expense, it will be because you have, by writing a convincing outline, persuaded him it is worth his time to do so. What we are DOING is selling the book before he even reads it. And it is a tool we are providing to help this first reader sell it to the others within the corporation who make the final decisions about what they publish. We want THIS READER to be our advocate within that publishing house. The better prepared we are, and the better ammunition we can provide him, the better our chances of selling the book are. The CD The CD is an important part of the Proposal Package. Here is a breakdown of its components. It is in effect our book. Everything they would need to print the book is there as computer files. Except our permission and a signed contract. It contains the manuscript, the proposed art for the front cover and back cover, any internal art, a short bio that will be an insert inside the front cover of the CD, and a very short summary / blurb that goes on the back cover of the book / CD package. The disc itself also has an image with your books title and my company logo. A GOOD photo of you may be what clinches the deal. If your photo is poorly chosen, then they can see we are not serious. I AM serious, which is why I have gone to so much work to help you make these books publishable. Check to make sure you have included all of the following for the CD: Front cover art (.jpg) no submitted completed Disc art (.jpg) no submitted completed Back cover art (.jpg) no submitted completed Internal art (.jpg) no submitted completed Back cover summary / blurb no submitted completed Bio for insert no submitted completed Author photo (hard copy) no submitted completed Manuscript TEXT no submitted completed Plus all the Proposal Package stuff listed above, which I have laid out as a worksheet so you can just fill in the blanks. Print it if you want, or just copy and paste and work on it on your computer. Submit it to me as a single document. Even if I have approved one part just keep sending me ALL of it at once so I can review and revise and have it all in one file that will go on the disc. This will allow me to keep everything in one place, and make sure ALL of it goes into the second folder on the CD. The first folder is your manuscript. RIA is correct in pointing out that a third folder might be the right way to present art. Make SURE your art is formatted .jpg. And send us originals, if you can, of photos, etc., so she can scan them with her top-grade machinery. Most of us have cheap scanners; she has the best tools available, and we should help her do the best work she is capable of. Thanks, RIA. I dont DO the art stuff. RIA has volunteered to do this for everyone, in exchange for the work I do punctuating her books. Another trick RIA has been using is that she saves her book in several formats. I use Microsoft Word, but she swears (LOUDLY) by WordPerfect. She is able to save the manuscript in both formats so I can read it without having to risk changing fonts, etc., in the conversion. Ill find out more about that, and fill you in. Publishers already have all those programs, but for you and me its a nice convenience if a writer can save to a program I have. When I opened a WordPerfect document recently that was NOT saved this way, it was about fifty pages longer in Microsoft Word. Multiple format saves might justifiable reasons for having extra folders was my point. Let me know which program your book was written in. And if you have changed programs used multiple programs updated your computer, etc., you might discover that you have several different things blended in one mix Smart quotes and dumb quotes in the same document, for example. Smart ones are like sixes and nines -- apostrophes with little curls on them. Dumb quotes are upright, like elevens. We want to use smart quotes. I cannot predict what your individual internal conflicts will be. When a friend called Microsoft to ask about a conflict he was experiencing with Word, he asked just how many variations there were. What he was told was that they upgrade, almost daily, that new discs are corrected like our manuscripts that they are the best versions available. They admitted to having over 500 DIFFERENT versions of Microsoft Word 5.1. No way I can guess what might happen. Keep your eyes out for little things that need tweaking in your manuscripts as a result of such software conflicts. Back Cover Summary / Blurb This is a bit of writing which resembles what you see on the back cover of paperbacks or the inside front flap of a hardcover book. Not really a summary or a synopsis or a blurb, but one of THOSE things A bit of promotional writing designed to entice the reader to open the book. Well want to put this on the back of the CD. Bio for insert This is VERY short, and appears on the reverse of the CD cover. It will be on card stock, and inserted behind the front cover so it is NOT visible from the outside but is what you see on the left when you open the jewel box opposite the CD itself.
