Verbal Postcard from ST. LOUISby Ellen Miz EllenThe Mississippi River is always the most dramatic point of my daily commute. Last spring, the river rose, swallowing a street on the St. Louis side and bringing the barges on the River uncomfortably close to the MetroLink track. Now the water is reaching a 10-year record low. Old broken bricks have emerged below the usual cobbles and yesterday, the Casino Queen gambling boat went aground while tied at her usual dock. This morning, she had cast off from the river bank, and with all her neon lights still ablaze was floating in the middle of the river. On the return trip, she was still in mid-channel while her usual berth on the Illinois side is being dredged out.
