How to reduce setup time before the machine

If all items are taken care of properly before the order gets to the machine the only thing the CNC Setup person needs to do is place the tools and holding fixture in the machine, do the offsets, upload the program and run the first part.  This should take less than 15 minutes not counting the run time.

All items should have been checked before they got scheduled for a machine so this is just a quick verification by the Set Up person that all is in order before the setup begins.

Check the work order for:
  • Part Number and Revision on work order?
  • Is the Print and Revision correct?
  • Job Layout?
  • Program?
  • Have all Pervious Operations been completed or signed off?
  • Is the Material correct?
  • Is the Quantity of Material correct for the Work Order Quantity?
  • Is the Work Holding correct?
  • Are the proper Inspection Tools available and calibrated?

  • Standardize

Every machine shops use tools and tooling that are the same on most if not all of their orders.  Standardizing their positions on the machine reduces programming, setup and editing time for the Shop.  These tools should be set in the machines given offsets and left in the machines and only removed or moved in rare circumstances and only when necessary.

How set ups, offsets are done needs to be standardized.  A person should be able to go from one machine to another without hesitation. All tools needed for the normal day to day operation of a machine should be within arms reach of that machine.

What the machinist must do to get and keep the setup time down

5S is extremely important. The machinist must keep the work place, machines, tools, tool box, clean and in their place at all times when in use and when not in use.  If a tool box or work area is messy and not in order the machinist must hunt for a tool rather than reach for one.

Putting a set of  wrenches on each machine is usually an investment that can really pay off.  When a machinist moves from one machine to another they should not have to collect their wrenches move to the other machine and then remove their wrenches.  All tools needed for the normal day to day operation should be on the machine.  Any time spent hunting down or borrowing wrenches is wasted.

Drawer's for tooling, collet racks, chucks, inserts, drills, should be in order and labeled.  Operators should not have to keep tooling, inserts, collets or fixtures  in their tool boxes. This gives them access but not others that may need them.
