Hunt Racing
With
the national hunt season just round the corner I thought you might like to
see a few thoughts and ideas I have picked up over the years. Some of the
ideas here are not all mine, some are others, some are what I have read, and
the rest is hard work and experience.
Hurdles
Betting
in hurdle races are basically quite simple. More often than not unless we
get some strong information in, I avoid any flat bred horses making their
debut over hurdles.
I also avoid
any flat bred horse running over 2miles. I like to see these horses handle
the trip first. Running over 2miles or more it is generally horses that are
bred for NH that come into their own. On soft ground in winter, horses need
plenty of stamina and strength, flat bred horses do not have that in abundance
so that's why I take a watching brief first.
Before you have a bet it is simply best to ignore anything the horse has done
on the flat, hurdling is a whole new ball game.
Novice
Hurdles
My
betting procedures are not to much different to the ordinary hurdle races,
I certainly avoid any short priced flat bred horse especially over any extended
trip like 2 and half miles. Look for the horse with proven stamina or has
at least been placed or won over the distance.
Handicap
Hurdles
If
possible try to avoid 2m handicap races. These are generally sprint handicaps,
however try and take notes, because the form can work out at a later date.
In distances over 2/1/2 m or further, use a simple method of supporting a
previous winner to do the same.
Try and stick to the better handicaps like 0-115 upwards.
Look for a horse which won last time out, stepped up in class, lost, then
put down to its previous grade to which it won in.
Novice
Chasers
If
you like to have a bet in novice chasers, try to concentrate on the better
class of race. Only back a chaser who has already shown solid form, a win
or close up. Ignore all hurdle form and ignore any hurdler making its debut
over fences. Just one point, chasers which go on to reach top level almost
win one of their first two races. Have you noticed how many times the third
favorite wins these races when you have an odds on favorite say 4/5 second
favorite is like 11/10 and the third horse is 4/1 check it out next time when
there are only 8 runners in the field. Back it EW.
Handicap
Chasers
Keep it simple
that is my message here when deciding to have a bet in handicap chasers. I
read an interesting book about handicap chasing and I studied carefully before
deciding to have a bet in them. I watched and monitored and took notes of
about two hundred handicap races, carefully selecting which races to bet in.
My findings are not all mine but they will help you when you decide to bet
in these races.
- Weight does
not matter so much in these races
- Younger chasers
make for better bets
- Horses suited
track and trip
- Good jumpers
that are in form
- Races at 2m
follow the 6/7 year ld
- Over 21/2m follow
the 7/8 year old
- Three miles
follow the 7/8 year old
- Over 31/2m follow
the 8/9 year old
French
Horses
Generally French
horses can be more mature than UK horses they can handle 3m or more at 5/6
years old. But there is evidence that the can decline earlier at 8 years old.
