Doc Con 5 was by all accounts a rousing success. Hosted by Courtney Rogers at his
home in Glendale, Arizona, November 9 and 10, 2002.
Attendees this year were from three states. Not a record by any means judging from
past years but, an accomplishment none the less. Traveling the farthest was Pat Lilja
from Golden Valley, Minnesota who attended his third Doc Con. Also attending his third
convention of Doc faithful, was Glenn Horner from Rio Rancho, New Mexico. The Arizona
contingent of bronze did not fail to attend and included founding member and perennial
organizer, Rob Smalley of Chandler who needless to say has attended all five Doc Cons.
Don White of Goodyear made it two in a row and attending for the fifth time was both Paul
Cook of Tempe and Jay Ryan of Peoria. Doc Con 5's host, Courtney Rogers made his
fourth trip to the con and can boast hosting the convention two times.
This years Doc Con saw the return of many of its most successful components to the
day's agenda. Gone was the customary viewing of the Pal Doc Savage film with everyone
agreeing that they did not need to watch it again. It did make a momentary appearance
on DVD however, so that everyone present could see that the DVD version was identical
to the pan and scan VHS version.
Instead the group socialized outside following a bratwurst lunch and discussed Doc
topics. Glenn Horner unveiled his new Doc Con Jeopardy game for the second year. Rob
Smalley prepared and organized the second annual Doc Con Radio Show. This years
show was The Red Lake Quest and each of the Doc Con Players received and kept their
scripts which were later signed by all of the Doc Con Players as a keepsake.
Speaking of keepsakes, this years Doc Con was a bonanza. Each attendee was ask to
bring something to pass out to the other members and to bring a prize for the raffle.
Everyone went out of their way to make, create, design, or purchase, something to add to
the enjoyment of all who attended. Thank you to everyone who made Doc Con 5 a
success.
