Doc Con 3 was held November 4, 2000 at the home of Courtney Rogers in Glendale
Arizona. Yes, the home! After two years of hosting the con in a Ramada Inn Suite,
Courtney came up with the idea of bringing the convention home . . . to his house. The
idea proved to be a terrific one. With the venue now personalized, Doc Con took on a
much warmer feel. Courtney also created the Doc Savage sign that would later be a
hallmark of subsiquent Doc Cons. Serving two purposes, the sign graced the front yard
of the hosts home proclaiming the land Doc Savage territory for the day and serving as
the foreground for the group picture and all Doc Con group pictures thereafter.
The Con had several more firsts as well. It was the first time that more than seven
attendees showed up. In fact, the number totaled twelve! It had it's first female and more
out-of-staters than locals. Also, it had a very significant first . . . Glenn Horner attending
his first Doc Con unveiled his Doc Jeopardy trivia game to rave reviews. Glenn and Rob
simultaniously unveiled a first by passing out gifts to each attendee. Glenn passed out
8"x10" prints of Flight into Fear. Rob handed out leather Empire State Building book
markers. Pat and Ron gave away paperbacks and fan publications respectively to anyone
who wanted them.
Now, that Doc Con was three years old, some of the tried and true elements of the day
were dusted off. The raffle drawing which featured items from some of the AZFOB also
saw items from Tim Faurote, Bob Bescoe and Leigh & Neil Mecham who were unable to
attend. The commemorative cards were of course signed by everyone, group pictures
taken and the Doc Savage: Man of Bronze movie was endured yet again.
As always the best part was being around and enjoying fellow Doc Savage fans.
