preface

The purpose of this site is to provide some solutions to the rendering differences between Netscape Navigator 4.7 and Internet Explorer 5.0. This site will refer to Netscape Navigator 4.7 as NN4.7 and Internet Explorer 5.0 as IE5.0.

Browser compatibility has always been an issue on the web, going back to the Netscape extensions that helped make Netscape the browser of choice. Compatibility is even more crucial now as the stylesheet-aware browsers make even more unique decisions on how to present code. Stylesheets should have made designing a page easier, but because of the browser wars, they actually have brought headaches of their own.

But stylesheets aren't going anywhere. The use of style in webpage design means leaner code and presentation that can be changed on whim from a central file. It's also the core of javascript programming, and javascript is required for any site that wants to look fully-developed and "professional".

For specific HTML, NN and IE render very differently. Whenever I find a dramatic example, I will update this site about it. My hope is to help others who are designing web pages for the Internet who want a uniform, predictable appearance in both browsers.

And please see my opinion pieces on women and computing. The women and computing articles take a woman's perspective applied to the issues affecting female users.
