"If
you don't dig, you don't know."Digging lots of snowpits is the best way to learn about snow and avalanches; the Backcountry Skier's Field Book is for the serious backcountry skier or snowboarder (and avalanche professional) who is interested in keeping track of the snowpack and staying alive in avalanche country. Avalanche professionals track the snowpack throughout the winter and so to should backcountry skiers and riders. The snowpack under goes changes due to temperature, settlement, and water vapor transmission; snow grains become cohesive and/or cohesionless over time. Tracking these changes can tell one if the snowpack is growing stronger or weaker.
I designed the THE BACKCOUNTRY SKIER'S FIELD BOOK after eight years as a volunteer field observer for the Colorado Avalanche Information Center and Loveland Ski Areas Professional Ski Patrol. I wanted a small field book that I could keep all of my snowpit field data readily at hand, so I could quickly track persistent weak layers throughout the winter. Then I got to thinking...a few "cheat sheets" on avalanche rescue would be helpful. Having been on a few avalanche rescues I know first hand how wild and chaotic rescues can be. Avalanche rescue "cheat sheets" are invaluable to both the professional and the novice alike. While putting the book together I added a few other "cheat sheets" about snow grains and stability tests. These too have helped me learn about snow and avalanches.
News: The BACKCOUNTRY SKIER'S FIELD BOOK has been selected as the Official field book for SNOWPRO PLUS+, a snow-cover profile software program used by avalanche professionals worldwide.
