On October 8, 2001, the nation of Belize was hit by vicious,
devastating Hurricane, Iris. While the Northern, Western and Central Districts were affected
by heavy winds and flooding, the entire Southern Districts of Stann Creek(Villages
of Hopkins, Seine Bight, Independence, Placencia) and Toledo (Villages of Monkey
River, Punta Negra, Big Falls, Dump, Jalacte, San Antonio, San Pedro Columbia,
San Miguel, Mafredi, Indian Creek, San Marcus, Crique Jute, Santa Cruz, Crique
Sarco, Blue Creek, Medina Bank) were totally destroyed, rendering over 13,000
people to homelessness.
