I drive a '91 Audi 200 Quattro with the 20-valve turbo 5-cylinder engine (200q20v), with quattro permanent all-wheel drive utilizing a torsen center differential and a locking rear differential.   Repairing and maintaining your audi can be daunting without the proper assistance and guidance; that's where this site can help. I've put together extensive repair information, documentation, and "tricks" to help make owning a classic Audi affordable and enjoyable.

  • First step in repairing your Audi is to get the proper factory service information. In North America, that's through Bentley Publishers: www.bentleypublishers.com

I've begun adding the ability to comment on the different pages within this site.  Check the bottom of each page...

Update on my car: I've totalled my original car, and purchased it back, plus another pearl on black 200q20v sedan... I'm currently swapping parts to make the new car my daily driver. The engine from my original car is planned to be transplanted into a '91 coupe quattro that I purchased.... anyone need some parts?

Important note!!!!  Audi has issued a recall for your rear Bose speakers for sedans; call your dealer and set up an appointment!
A number of '91 200q20v sedans equipped with amplified Bose rear speakers have had problems with amp failures, and is some cases, smoke or fires, leading to damage or total vehicle loss.  Please inspect your rear speakers, and consider disconnecting them!!!!  More details on the Radio and Speaker page.

Photos of a fire damaged (i.e., totalled) 200q20v sedan now added to this page.

Several 200q20v owners have noted a tear in the web of metal supporting the passenger side strut tower up front.

    • Dale McCormack has compiled all the parts necessary for installing your "Bernie Strut Brace" and has them in stock for $70 postpaid (domestic).
For additional information contact him directly: dale@themccormacks.org

I took some pictures at the NEQ Audi corral at the Audi Mt. Washington Climb to the Clouds in New Hampshire June 24-25 2000. Unfortunately, we've likely seen the last of these events, as they can't find a title sponsor.

The group purchase of modified engine control units (ECUs), consisting of two modified EPROMs and a 2.5-bar pressure transducer (to replace the stock 2.0-bar transducer), is over.  I've left the group purchase page up to show you the details.  You can contact either vender, but the discount is over.

The index page to various repair procedures for the '91 200q has been revised to match the Bentley Repair Groups.  Expect a major revamp of the page structures to follow.  Most of these repair procedures were saved from various internet posts from other '91 200q owners, or type 44 owners.  Repair index page

I also have a page describing the various engine components, and their functions.
Another recent addition is a page describing some of the safety features designed in to the '91 200q20v.

I've set up my Links page to allow you to add your own suggested links.  Audi related, please  : )

We conducted a poll on who's chipped their carsHere's the results so far.

I've set up an association with Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com to sell Audi Factory repair manuals and other related books from their sites. My booklistand descriptions are available here. You don't have to buy through me; I've provided descriptions and ISDN info so that you can get them at your local bookstore, too.

Thinking of buying your own 200q20v?  Here's a faq (frequently asked questions) compilation about the type 44 audi, including the 5000,100, and 200 (and the V8 and even various other audis using similar parts/designs): http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Garage/9715/faq.html  (many thanks to Aleksander Meirwza for creating this excellent resource).

Where to look for them?  Try http://www.audifans.com/qmarket.html; http://s-cars.org (follow the link to classifieds); and various other online resources.

I did not attend the Historic Races at Monterey the last weekend of August, 1999, and will probably always regret that...it celebrated 100 years of Auto Union and Audi, and Audi appears to have pulled out all the stops.  This career thing really gets in the way.
A number of audi fans did, however, attend... here's some reports: 1999 Historic Races at Monterey

    Lighting upgrades:
Fall of '98 I helped arrange a group purchase of european headlights.  Details are available here:  eurolights.html  Please note that the special pricing is over; lights now cost about $100 more.

If you're installing relays for lights on your audi, look at this image for Igor Kessel's relayed wiring harness schematic.   http://members.aol.com/c1j1miller/eurowire.html

Also look at the Repair index page under Body for more info on wiring and on European replacement lights.

A Spring Tech Session was held at Huw Powell's place on .  Very successful, lots of timing belts changed, in addition to many other maintenance/repair tasks.  Lot of fun to put some names to faces... perhaps next time I can even work on my own car!

A timing-belt-a-thon was held in May '99 at my house: http://members.aol.com/c1j1miller/techday.html  and  http://www.humanspeakers.com/audi/NH1.htm

Another Tech Day  was held on December 4, 1999 in Concord, New Hampshire, at Nothern European Automotive, Inc., Tim McLean's new audi shop.
603-228-0533.  Brief report:  we had about 6 people for the event (each of which owned at least one 20-valve turbo audi!).  I repacked CV joints on one front driveshaft (a messy job!); we played with the scantool to diagnose Brett's car; checked out Kirby's new '95 S6; .......... and a bunch of other maintenance tasks.  It was great having Tim McLean and Eric of Northern European Automotive on-hand to provide tools, expertise, shop parts, a warm and dry workspace, and the confidence to try some of these daunting repair tasks (all at no charge!).  Tim's a good mechanic and friend, and I highly recommend his shop.
