My own take on how and why this took place is very different from Alan Hoch's. In my world, while magick and some supernatural creatures existed before the "Big Event," they were all at a very low power level. Magick was primarily ritualized -- long hours of casting intricate spells for subtle results. No "blast 'em" type bolts-o-fire magick at all. Magick had been fading from the world since the beginnings of the scientific and industrial revolutions, taking the denizens of Faerie and other mysterious worlds with it. In March of 1998, however, all this changes. A large asteroid (or so it seems) enters the earth's atmosphere at a high latitude. Fortunately it breaks up as it does so, and small bits of it come down across the northern hemisphere. Almost nothing of any size reaches the surface of the planet. All that is found at the impact sites in the following days is some strange, irridescent dust. But in the wake of the meteor shower strange things begin to happen, and magick seems to be returning to the world. Why? There is a reason, but I'm not going to post it here. You never know where your Players may end up. If you are a GM who is curious, just e-mail me and I'll explain what's going on behind the scenes.
