Richard Britteridge

BORN: possibly the Richard Britteridge bp. 31 December 1581, Crowhurst, Sussex, England
DIED: 21 December 1620, Plymouth
MARRIED: unknown, probably unmarried

Richard Britteridge was the first of the Mayflower passengers to die after reaching Plymouth. Several other passengers died before him, including William Button (en route); and Edward Thompson, Jasper More, Dorothy (May) Bradford, and James Chilton (all of whom died while the Mayflower was in Cape Cod [Provincetown] Harbor).

There is only one baptism of a Richard Britteridge between 1560 and 1620 found in the I.G.I. parish register abstractions--that of Richard Britteridge baptized 31 December 1581 in Crowhurst, Sussex.  There are apparently other Britteridge families in South Shoebury, Essex, Pritwell, Essex, and St. Katherine Cree, London. (Charles Edward Banks, "Ancestry and Homes of the Pilgrim Fathers", 1929).
