D.J. Duck Model 765 HSG ~ 7.5' ~ 2/2. 3.7 oz. ~5wt. SN 2033 ~ EXC++ ~ The late Douglas Duck was a talented maker from Texas who passed away in 2001, much, much too early. He had acquired a well earned reputation for building fine quality rods based on a variety of classic tapers. From the late Dick Spurr’s "Classic Bamboo Rodmakers, past and present" Each rod is meticulously handcrafted from the finest extra select pre and post-embargo cane". The cane Mr. Duck used was oven tempered in the culm, hand split, hand straightened (to eliminate cross graining) and hand planed to exacting tolerances. Interestingly, the spiral node pattern was configured in the firing order of a six cylinder engine, so that no section of a rod has nodes appearing on more than one flat, and as far away from each other on adjacent flats. This rod is built on a H.S. Pinky Gillum taper and features rich brown cane, similar to Granger in color, lightly swelled butt, brown silks tipped black and gold at the ferrule stations and grip check. Black stripper, snakes and tip-tops. Bright N/S ferrules (complete with ferrule plug) fit smooth and tight and give a satisfying ‘pop’ when separated. Tapered dry fly grip and Screw D/L’ing seat with highly figured and polished walnut spacer. I noted a few hook dig in the nose of the grip from use as a fly keeper. This is very minor as the rod simply has not seen much use. Wound over WC. Ho HK. Inked on the rod is D.J. Duck, Maker – 765 HSG 7 ½’ – 5 No. 2033 on three flats. The serial number is also inked on each tip section along with dots that signify tip 1 and tip 2. Comes with the original bag, hang tag, ferrule plug, and brass capped aluminum tube. This rod has a sweet brisk taper that is just on touch on fast side of medium and throws tight accurate loops with a Cortland Clear Creek WF-5 and Cortland 444 Peach DT-5. You just don’t see many Duck rods out there so take advantage while you can… $1,795

SALE PENDING Heddon #17 ~ 7.5' ~ 3/1 ~ 1 1/2F ~ 4.4 oz. 4/5 wt ~ VG+ ~ This light line rod is from Heddon’s Neo-Classic era (1939 – 1948), widely regarded by many as Heddon’s best era and features browntone cane wrapped in jet black silks, black stripper, hardened steel snakes and tip-top. Black Heddon-issue ferrules fit smooth and tight and give a loud 'pop' upon separation. Slight ferrule looseness on the cane at the butt ferrule/mid male (the ferrule fit is perfect) can be felt when the rod is waggled, although no audible click was noted. Accordingly, I would recommend that both these ferrules be reset. Reversed half-Wells grip. Black D/L’ing screw and slide hood seat over a black tenite spacer. Wound over WC. Folding ring HK. Original spiral Heddon writing with straight line rods stats are inked on the butt. Comes with the original black Heddon bag (no tag) and original Heddon labeled black aluminum tube (no tube cap). It throws tight loops with a delicate presentation with a Cortland 444 Peach DT-4 and Cortland Clear Creek WF-5. Although not a collector’s item, this wand will make someone a faithful companion for many more years. Because of the need for a ferrule re-set… $350

SALE PENDING Heddon #20 ~ 7.5' ~ 3/2 ~ 1 1/2F ~ 4.2oz ~ 4/5wt. ~ EXC- (exceptions noted) ~ This light line rod is from Heddon’s Neo-Classic era (1939 – 1948), widely regarded by many as Heddon’s best era. The #20 was built in Heddon’s “Handamde Rod Department” where all rods (# 20 and up) were crafted by a single rodmaker. The only exception to this was the #22 which was Heddon’s lowest grade rod and is hardly ever seen. This rod appears to have been over-coated. The mid section and mid-female ferrule are replacements which may or may not be Heddon-issue. The new black snake guides on the mid are not Heddon-issue. The cane used for this rod has a beautiful bronze-browntone shade (the mid is a few shades lighter than the other sections) and is elegantly wrapped in burgundy silks tipped gold. I noted a few minor nicks in the varnish and a small (approx 1.5mm) crack is present proximal to a nodal station between the 1st and 2nd snake on one of the tips. The crack appears to be only slight and the surrounding cane appears sound. As a precaution, I would recommend a protective wrap be installed over this area. Dark stripper, snakes, and tip-tops. Ferrules are tight and smooth working. Brown marbleized tenite spacer with black D/L'ing screw and sliding hood hardware Wound over WC. Folding ring HK. Comes with a Heddon bag marked #120 and non-labeled aluminum tube. This Heddon classic has a brisk medium taper and throws tight accurate loops with Cortland Peach DT-4 and Cortland Clear Creek WF-5. Should make a welcome and affordable addition to your arsenal. $495

G.H. Howells (blank) Finished by Ed Hartzell ~ 7.5’ ~ 2/2 ~ 3 3/4 oz. ~ 5wt. ~ EXC++ ~ From the bench of the late Ed Hartzell, comes this wonderful wand that he meticulously crafted on a set of Gary Howells blanks. Ed Hartzell needs little introduction in the world of bamboo rod building, but if you find yourself pining for background info, check out Joe Beelart’s fine book “Oregon Bamboo.” There is also a passage about Mr. Hartzell in Ed Engle’s fine book “Splitting Cane” (see the chapter on Dwight Lyons). The rod features a beautiful shade of light browntone cane with 2 x 2 spiral nodes wrapped in brown silks tipped gold (in the Howells tradition), and protected by a mirror-like varnish finish. Mildrum stripper, chrome snakes and tip-tops. Perfectly fit ferrules are wrapped in brown silk ‘ala Howells (and Winston) and give a resounding ‘pop’ when separated. Western Wells torpedo grip and screw U/L'ing seat w/ dark zebra wood spacer. Petite N/S WC. Folding ring HK. Comes in a quality bag and aluminum tube. The medium action is very pleasurable to cast and capable of pinpoint accuracy. I really liked the rod when paired with a Cortland Peach 444 WF-5 and/or DT-5. To complete the package, the rod’s new owner of will be provided with a letter of provenance, signed by both Ed Hartzell and original rod owner (Craig Lynch) as well as the original stress graph for the rod, drawn-up by Ed Hartzell. Superb! $1,895

Heddon #17 Black Beauty ~ 8' ~ 3/2 ~ 1 3/4F 4oz. ~ EXC RS (exceptions noted) ~ This circa 1950 Heddon classic was nicely restored (not sure by who did the work). The butt section in down 1" and tips are down 7/16” and ¼”,respectively. I doubt the tips were broken and their current length is more likely a result of tip-top replacement during the restoration work. The rod features browntone cane with straight line writing, jet black silks tipped orange, black stripper, hardened steel snakes and black tip-tops (one tip-top may be original, the other is a modern replacement). Ferrule fit is smooth (no 'pop' upon separation which is typical of Heddon rods). Reversed half-Wells grip. Screw D/L’ing and slide hood black pyaralin seat. Wound over WC. Folding ring HK. Comes with the original black Heddon bag with stitched in hang tag and a black aluminum tube (thought to be original, but sans label). Although not a collector’s item, this wand will make someone a very faithful companion for years to come. It throws nice loops with a provides for a delicate presentation. I liked it with a Cortland Clear Creek WF-5. You just don’t see a lot of 8’ Balck Beauties. This one can be had at a great price because of the mentioned issues… $395

Montague Flash ~ 8.5' ~ 3/2 ~ 6.1 oz. 6/7wt. EXC++ (exception noted)~ The Flash was one of Montague’s most popular rods. The label on this classic production rod indicates that it was built between 1939 and 1949. It features flamed cane, red wraps tipped gold with alternating red and gold signature wraps. Varnish, black stripper, hardened steel snakes and tip tops, and plated ferules are all believed to be original. The female ferrule on the mid section is loose on the cane and should be re-set before future usage. Comfortable Wells grip with a full metal screw D/L'ing seat. Exposed WC. Folding ring HK. Light cigar (almost straight) grip. D/L'ing screw and sliding hood seat over a walnut spacer. The rod is marked Orvis Impregnated, Madison, 8 1/2' 4 3/8 oz., and G.B.F (8) on consecutive flats. Comes with the original Orvis bag and original Orvis labeled aluminum tube. This rod has a medium-slow action and, as with most Orvis cane rods, throws nicely with a line wt or two lighter than it is marked. I liked it best with a Cortland 444 Peach DT-6. A superb example of Orvis’ work at an affordable price $425

Charles Daly Reg. 181 “Para Taper” ~ 9' ~ 2/2 ~ 9/10wt. ~ EXC RS (exceptions noted) ~ This quality big water rod from the famous New York firearms and outdoor sporting specialists features nicely flamed shafts wrapped in brown silks and protected by a shiny varnish finish. Daly rods were widely recognized as having been built by Gene Edwards. I noted a few glue lines on the butt section that appear to have been addressed during the restoration. Oxidized stripper, bronze snakes and tip-tops. Blued N/S ferrules fit smooth & tight and give a resounding ‘pop’ when separated. Cigar grip shows some ridging but is sound and serviceable. Screw U/L’ing seat with walnut spacer and detachable fighting butt. Exposed blued WC. Folding ring HK. Inked on the butt in neat black script is Charles Daly “Para-Taper” Reg #181 9’ Comes with the original bag and labeled aluminum tube. What a cannon! $495

Gene Edwards Osprey 1B-15 ~ 9' ~ 3/2 ~ 6wt. ~ EXC RS ~ Although not 100% certain, this rarely seen model is thought to have been built by Gene Edwards circa 1950. It features light carmel-colored cane, yellow silks tipped black, a red agate stripper, bronze snakes and chrome tip-tops. Smooth and tight fitting N/S ferrules give a resounding 'pop' when separated. Cigar grip with screw D/L’ing seat and cedar barrel spacer. Exposed WC. Folding ring HK. Comes with what is believed to be the original bag and original fiber tube. The rod has a smooth medium action and throws nice loops with a Cortland Peach 444 DT-6. A great rod for lakes, float tubes, bass buggin and/or large trout water where the wind blow hard and often. $350

Goodwin Granger Special Model GS9050 ~ 9' ~ 3/2 ~ 5.7 oz. ~ 6wt. ~ VG+ RS (exceptions noted)~ This Rocky Mountain special was restored and features carmel-colored cane, swelled butt, 3 x 3 spiral node pattern, granger green wraps and quality Granger furnishings. I would rate the varnish as adequate but sound as I noted some runs and inconsistencies. N/S ferrules fit smoothly and give that hallmark Granger 'pop' when separated. However, the butt/mid fit is a bit worn and a light click can be felt while waggleing the rod. This issue should be addressed before the rod is fished. Reversed half wells grip is soiled and ridged but still sound. Patented internal U/L'ing metal seat with proper stampings is in good working order. This reel seat was used on Granger rods built after 1935. Exposed WC. No HK. Comes with an olive Granger bag and aluminum tube. This rod has that Granger medium action and throws tight loops with a Cortland 444 Peach DT-6. This is a nice stick from a quality maker at a great price. $250

Heddon #20 Bill Stanley’s Favorite ~ 9’ ~ 3/2 ~ 2 1/2F ~ 5.7 oz. ~ 6/7 wt. ~ VG- (exceptions noted) ~ This 1950’s Post Classic era rod was built in Heddon’s “Handamde Rod Department” in the old Dowagic, Michigan plant where all rods (#20 and up) were crafted by a single rodmaker. The only exception to this was the #22 which was Heddon’s lowest grade rod and is hardly ever seen. It features browntone cane wrapped in maroon silks (the #20 lost its gold tipping in 1954), swelled butt, black stripper, snakes and tip-tops. The varnish is crazed, has some bag marks, and some minor nicks and scratches. The shafts should respond nicely to a thorough rub-down. The tips have light sets that do not seem to affect the rods performance. Soiled half-wells grip is lightly ridged but very sound and serviceable. D/L & S/B seat over brown marbelized spacer. Wound over WC. Folding ring HK. Straight line Heddon writing. Era correct bag looks to be non-Heddon issue. Original Heddon labeled aluminum tube. The rod has a comfortable medium-slow to medium action and would make a great float tube bass rod. This is a quality rod that could use some TLC. $225

N/S Leonard step down ferules fit smooth and tight and give a resounding ‘pop’ when separated. Comfortable cigar grip. Screw D/L'ing seat with butternut spacer. The butt cap carries the following Leonard die stamp - The Leonard Rod HL Leonard Rod CO Makers Reg. U.S. Pat. Off. . Petite exposed N/S WC. Folding ring HK. Comes with the original gray Leonard bag (sans hang tag and there is a hole in the bottom) and original Leonard brass capped aluminum tube. Simply put, this rod is a cannon and, in the hand of a competent caster, is capable of throwing the entire fly line. I really liked it with a Cortland 444 Peach DT-6, but that's me. This rod will easily handle a WF-7 and/or DT-7. Superb!$895

Heddon De Luxe #35 ~ 9.5' ~ 3/2 ~ 2 3/4F ~ 6oz. ~ 7/8wt. ~ VG+ RS ~ This quality rod from Heddon’s Classic era 1933 – 1938) was one of Heddon's best rods, on par with the #50 and #1000 and along with the #20, was made in Heddon’s “Handmade Rod Department” where all rods (Model 20 and up) were crafted by a single rod maker. It was restored at some point in the past and the original Heddon writing and varnish (from the WC to the end of the spiral writing) was kept intact. The rod features a beautiful shade of browntone cane wrapped in antique gold silks tipped black. Swelled butt, red agate stripper, hardened steel bronze snakes and blued tip-tops. Smooth and tight fitting N/S gun metal ferrules. Reversed half-wells grip has been cleaned (not by me) and has some minor ridging. Black screw D/L'ing and slide hood seat over a circassian walnut spacer. Black pyralin WC. Folding ring HK. Original sprial Heddon writing with #35 inked at the WC. The tips have minor sets that have no effect on the rods performance. Comes with a Heddon bag with stitched in hang tag and Hedddon aluminum tube. This high quality rod has a medium-slow to medium action and throws a smooth DT-7 and/or WF-8. A perfect rod for smallies, bucketmouths, large trout, and/or steelies. 9.5’ ~ 2 3/4F Heddon’s don’t show up that often. $295

J.S. Sharpe LTD. of Aberdeen “Scottie” ~ 10' ~ 2/1 (made that way)~ 7 ¼ oz. ~ 7 wt. ~ AS NEW ~ I don’t think this popular salmon rod from across the pond has ever bee used. It was sold by Farlow of London as indicated by the Oval-shaped ‘F’ logo on the butt section and features spliced sections cut on one of the original Aberdeen "mills". The accuracy of the mill is said to produce a precise and perfectly uniform cut which ensures that the tapers are constant throughout and the glued surfaces are perfectly flush throughout their length so there can be no weak spots. Beautiful honey-colored cane with golden 3 x 3 spiral nodes wrapped in burgundy silks protected by a smooth and buffed impregnated finish. There are some stress marks in the stripping guide wraps. Chrome stripper, snakes and bridged tip-top. Spliced section connectors show no use what-so-ever. Screw D/L'ing metal seat Exposed WC. HK loop. J.S. Sharpe LTD Aberdeen and the Serial No. 9 8 147 is stamped into the reel seat. 10’ #7, the Scottie logo are present on the butt section.
