Color Guard

Band

Students will study/rehearse/perform music of varying levels of difficulty and styles representing the classical to contemporary periods in music history, including some jazz, popular and multi-cultural music. During first semester, instruction in field and street marching techniques will also be included. Lessons in music history, theory and listening will be incorporated into the daily rehearsals. Through the rehearsal/performance process, students will improve their musicianship skills and technical facility on their instruments. All students should recognize and develop the individual responsibilities and self-discipline that are essential to the development and growth of the organization.

First semester performance opportunities will focus on Marching Band. Students will perform at all home football games, at 3-4 all-day field competitions held on certain Saturdays in November and December, and at a Holiday Parade. A three-hour Monday-evening rehearsal is usually scheduled during performance weeks. There is one major fundraiser (See’s Christmas Candy) in November/December to earn money for equipment, uniforms, etc.

Second semester performance opportunities will focus on Concert Band. Students will perform at two formal concerts. Other performance opportunities may include band festivals, solo-ensemble festivals, informal community outreach concerts, and chamber music recitals.

Requirements to join: the ability to play a standard band instrument, as demonstrated by a prior instrumental music course or an entrance audition; people who want to learn to play a instrument may join with the instructor’s approval.

Color Guard: "Music In Motion" (First Semester Only)

In this class, students will develop an understanding of the relationship between music and motion and learn to synchronize movement to music by performing as the Color Guard with the CHS Warrior Band. Color Guard members will learn routines that interpret the Band’s music using tall flags, other props and equipment, and dance. As they learn the movement skills required for the routines being prepared, they will also explore the basic elements of music (rhythm, tempo, meter, instruments, melody, harmony, form, texture, and dynamics).

A three-hour Monday-evening rehearsal is usually scheduled during marching season. Color Guard may have additional after-school practices by mutual agreement. Through the rehearsal/performance process, Color Guard members will develop the skills/techniques required for routines being prepared. All students should recognize and develop the individual responsibilities and self-discipline that are essential to the development and growth of the organization.
