Notes
This document is most substantial, for it indicates that the 10th Texas Infantry
had turned in their Austrian 54 cal. rifles, due to the fact that they had captured and refitted
themselves with 58 cal. springfield weapons from their recent victory at Pickett's Mill on May 27th.
The following account, published in the Atlanta based newspaper the Memphis Appeal,
on June 7, 1864, substantiates the accumulation at Pickett's Mill of the enemy's weapons: To
sum up the results, any impartial observer will say that the Texas boys "are all right." Our
loss in killed in the brigade is 41, wounded 117. The loss of the enemy in killed in front of
the brigade 300, wounded 1200, prisoners taken 250, and about 1700 stands of small arms, most of
which were new Springfield rifles."
The reason for this invoice not being turned in closer to the date of the time they
were captured, it can only be assumed that Lt. Jewell had his hands full supplying the men with ammunition
as they has been maintaining a constant fight of it, since May 8th.
