Janie was my very first show dog. I had to ask the breeder how to get ahold of a premium, then when it came, how to fill it out. Our very first show, Janie got BOB.
However, she was the only IG there--what did I know? I asked the judge to take a picture, because I thought, this may be the only time she ever gets a chance
to win a show, and I actually told him that. Nothing but supreme confidence!
It was a windy day, and Janie, who truly HATES wind, took forever to set up for the picture. I was getting really nervous and embarassed, but finally, with me sitting
behind her to shield her from the wind, she stopped hugging the table long enough
for a quick picture. I cut out the judge because I didn't think he'd want to be seen with
us, and he was too exasperated to look very pleasant:-).
After such a mortifying experience most people would just crawl home and stay
there for good. Especially since the same judge was doing the toy group. But
I didn't know how to read a judging program then, so was blissfully unaware and
waited around anyway. No, we didn't place, but it was good to try it out, and deal with the butterflies, and come to grips with failure on the big stage and all that. I was
watching everyone else and trying to do as they did. Except for fluffing up her fur, like the Pom and Peke handlers were doing to their charges:-). See, I wasn't TOTALLY dumb. Instead, I dried off my greasy sweaty palms on her back and made her look real shiny.
Ha ha.
The next day there were several other IGs, almost enough for 2 points, and Janie won! You coulda knocked me over with a feather! I thought, hey, this is really cool. First weekend, first point--piece o' cake. Little did I know, that was only their strategy for hooking me on dog shows. It was about a year later that Janie won her second show, this time for 2 pts. I didn't stop showing her for any reason, not when she when into her first heat and she had a false pregnancy, and looked like a big ugly bloated football, not when she went through a looong period of pop-up ears, nothing stopped
me from going to dog shows.
I was slow in realizing things....but I finally realized that Janie was a fairly humble
beginning for a show/breeder, and was not foundation bitch material. But through her
I learned so much, mostly what NOT to do, but hey.
Now Janie is my HBIC, my alpha, and I make up excuses why she should not go to
a pet home. Janie is the one I've gone through the most adventures with, and there
are many Janie stories untold, and many yet to come.
