The National Swimming Championships at Sheffield provided the stage for the swim of the year from a British swimmer when Newquay Cormorants Jonathan Fox smashed the World Record for the 50mts backstroke for  S7 classification in the heats of the multidisability event which is part of the National Programme

  The 16 yr old one of the youngest at the event took the gold medal in the final again inside the old World Record from World and Olympic Champion 28yr old Andrew Linsey of Incas who felt defeat for the first time in backstroke competition  since the Olympics of Sydney 2000 

 

Jon indicated what was to come the day before in the 100mts backstroke when taking silver just 13 hundredths of a second behind Linsey and 9 tenths of a second outside the World Record which has stood since the Sydney Olympics.

 

The young man showed massive maturity and confidence and is now one of Britons best hopes for a medal in Bejjing next year.

 

Jon will be travelling out with the Matthew Whorwood the Cormorants other medal prospect for Bejjing with the G.B. team on the 12th Aug to Macau to a training camp under conditions they will have when they go to China

 

The hotel that Manchester United have just vacted after there Far East Tour is the base for the camp and also for the holding camp next Aug for the Olympics

 

Matt Whorwood also got amongst the medals in taking Bronze behind World and Olympic Champion Sasha Kindred in the 100mts breaststroke

 

Phil Goldman Jonathans Coach said that the performnce was not unexspected as the work in training gave all the pointers that a World Record attempt was on.

The support we have had from British Swimming in the way of Biomechanics,Physiolgy,Landwork profiling and Coach education has been of emence help in achieving World standards
