The ASA have designed this document to help candidates find their ‘next step’ on the qualifications pathway for Teaching and Coaching.

It has been developed to be used as Advice and Guidance only and not as a set of regulations, please refer to the specific qualification syllabus for pre-requisites to go onto those programmes.

Holders of existing ASA qualifications who do not wish gain further qualifications at this time, but would still like to progress their skills and knowledge may do so by undertaking appropriate ASA or IoS quality assured CPD programmes.

LIMITATIONS OF THIS MATRIX:

·         This Matrix only outlines next steps for those qualified with ASA Swimming Teaching, ASA/UKCC Swimming Coaching and ASA/UKCC Teaching Aquatics Qualifications.  It does note take into account the next steps for existing ASA Teaching qualifications in Diving, Water Polo and Synchronised Swimming

·         Please note Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications are still available in Teaching Swimming to People with Disabilities

·         In the new UKCC qualifications “Teachers of Aquatics” is the terminology used to describe what used to be called “Swimming Teachers” – this is due to them teaching more than just swimming strokes but the basics of all aquatic movements.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

·         All holders of an ASA and/or ASA/UKCC qualification are strongly recommended to hold an ASA Teacher/Coach Licence. To maintain a licence you are required to obtain points through a variety of mechanisms of which one is attending Continuing Professional Development (CPD) seminars approved by the ASA

QUALIFICATIONS PRE 1994:

ASA Teaching/Coaching qualifications gained prior to 1994;(Preliminary Teachers, Teacher, Advanced Teacher)

(Preliminary Club Coach, Assistant Club Coach, Club Coach)

·         Candidates holding these qualifications should write into the ASA Workforce Development Department / Awarding Body with a CV, references, evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD), teaching/coaching experience etc. for advice on the appropriate route to take.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

·         Candidates holding aquatic qualifications gained through other awarding bodies (including overseas) should apply in writing to the ASA Workforce Development Department with a copy of their certificates for advice on the appropriate route to take
