Anna Black was born March 19, 1775. Her grandfather, Robert Black, came to York (now Adams) county with the first settlers in 1740. He settled on a tract of land lying in Cumberland and Mountjoy townships. Rock Creek passed through the land. On this creek he erected grist and saw mills, and convenient to them a three-story stone dwelling house, the wonder of the neighborhood at that day but which would not be noticed now except for the immense thickness of its walls. Those dwellings were erected about the time of the Revolutionary War, and are all yet used for the purposes for which they were built more than one hundred years ago. Robert Black had two sons. James, the eldest, never married. Henry, the second son, married Mary, daughter of Thomas Weems, of Mountjoy township. He was Captain of a company of rangers during the Revolutionary War, and was sent to guard the frontier against the depredations of the Indians. He was stationed at Forts Lyttleton and the Burnt Cabins, in one of the valleys of the North mountain. At his father's death he inherited the estate jointly with his brother, which consisted of three large farms, with grist and saw mills, and which at the brother's death was all inherited by Henry and his children. Henry and Mary (Weems) had eight children, who all married and settled around them, five of them on adjoining farms. And until near the close of his life, when with young families growing up some of them were induced to go west, he could have seen them all in one day. He died in April 1836.
