William Hinds (Hines)
of
Marblehead, Massachusetts

I believe most of the confusion regarding William Hines (Hindes, Hinds) arises from the book History and Genealogy of the Hinds Family, by Albert Henry Hinds, Portland Maine, 1899 which has been copied and used in many genealogies, and unfortunately recirculated on the internet.

The author Albert Henry Hinds supposed William (age 35) and Margaret Hinds/Hine ( age 30) who came to America, on the ship Paule in 1635 were not husband and wife because William married Sarah Ingersoll in Salem, Massachusetts. He states "although this name was spelled H-a-i-n-e-s there can be no doubt that it refers to William Hind, for no where in genealogical references to the Haynes or Haines families in this country, has the compiler found any claim to a William at so early a period as William Haines of Salem (doubtless William Hine of the Paule)". The author went on to claim the William Hinds of Marblehead, Massachusetts was the son of this William Haines of Salem, and his ancestor John Hinds/Haines of Bridgewater. Massachusetts was the son of William Hinds of Marblehead.  The compiler, Albert H. Hinds, however cautioned, " (he) does not wish to lay them down as facts in the Hinds family, although everything strongly points in its favor, but wishes simply to lay them before the members of the family, in the hope that it will result in bringing the facts out at no distant dae" (History and Genealogy of the Hinds Family, p. 10-14)

Most of us realize this is not a very solid and documented claim.  We also understand the dangers of assuming a relationship based on nothing but the similarity of the spelling of a name or the location where it is found. Research indicates that William Haynes and Sarah Ingersoll of Salem Village, Massachusetts did not have a child name William. I have wondered why Albert H. Hinds was so sure his John Hinds of Bridgewater had not arrive in Plymouth County within a few years prior to his marriage in 1709.  It seemed he was trying very hard to connect him to an earlier New England ancestry.

I also want to add that one should not rely on a single source for information.  Even the best known genealogical dictionaries and published genealogies have errors, which were sometimes copied from earlier works with the same errors.

Other genealogies and records I found on the internet state William Hinds, Hindes, Hines, Hins, Hains, Haines, Haynes, Heynes, Haynd  of Marblehead, was:

William Hines/Hinds - maybe was born 1614 England. (the date of 1614 is not explained)
William Hines/Hinds - maybe born 1600 and emigrated 1635, age 35 on the "Paule" with his sister Margery, age 30. The "Paule" left London, 2 Jul 1635, destination Virgina. This record indicates a birth date of 1600.
"cousin" William Hine, his wife Abigail and their son John are mentioned in the will of John Peach Sr.who died 1684 in Marblehead, MA. According to the will,  John Peach Sr. made "my cousin" William Hine and his wife Abigail residuary legatees of his current dwelling house in Marblehead, bequeathed a lot of land to John Hine "the only child at present of my cousin William Hine", making William and his wife residuary legatees, and made William Hine the executor.  The will of John Peach, Sr. was written on 2 October 1682 and proved 30 September 1684. This close association between John Peach, Sr. and William Hine could be a clue to the ancestry of Willliam because for whatever reason, William Hine/Hinds and his family were important to John Peach, Sr. Several other legatees were called "cousin" and the term may not have been used in it's true meaning as we know it. It is believed John Peach came from Dorsetshire, England around 1630, was not married and had no children.  It is noted that later two sons of William and Abigail married the Peach sister, Alice and Sarah. These sisters were granddaughters of John Peach, Jr. of Marblehead who several years younger than John Peach Sr., is thought to be closely related to him.
In January 1680, William Hinds occupied land adjacent to the South & West of Widow Parnell Bartoll and her neighbors Joseph Dollaber and John Peach at Peach Point in Marblehead.  Essex Co. Deed Bk. 7:715
William Hines/Hinds - maybe born about 1645 (the date of 1645 is not explained) signed a will on 9 Feb 1735/36 Marblehead, Essex Co. MA His estate was probated on 30 Jun 1736.
William Hines/Hinds - maybe born about 1657 (the date of 1657 is not explained) married #1 Abigail Ward about 1681 and #2 Elizabeth Norman, widow of Aholiab Diamond.
William Hines/Hinds - married #1 Abigail Ward and #2 Elizabeth Norman and #3 Lydia Hatherly

Abigail Ward was baptized 6 Aug 1669 at the First Church, Salem, Essex Co. MA on the same day as her sisters, Remember and Sarah. She was the daughter of Maj. Samuel Ward and Abigail Maverick of Marblehead, MA.  She died in 1688 according to the First Congregational Church Records of Marblehead, Massachusetts. Her father, Maj. Samuel Ward died in 1690 on an expedition to Canada during the French-Indian War. According to his will, a witness verified the will was left "on his goaing to Canada on ye 30th of Jul 1690.. at that time he was a disposeing mind and...was well composed, being seriously melancholy in haste to looke after his souldiers". Major Samuel Ward's will was probated 22 Apr 1691 (Essex Co. PR #28928)  Abigail was a great granddaughter of Isaac Allerton.

Elizabeth Norman was born about. 1663 in Marblehead, Essex, MA and died 15 October 1716 in Marblehead, Essex county, MA; she was the daughter of Richard Norman and Margaret Flint of Marblehead, MA and was the widow of Mr. Diamond. Elizabeth and William Hinds were married 16 Nov 1688.  (Massachusetts and Maine Families, Vol. III, p.52)

Lydia Hatherly married William Hinds, 22 Dec 1725 Marblehead

William Hindes was an impressed (drafted)  soldier on  1 December 1675 out of the foot company  command by Capt. Joseph Gardner of Salem for warfare reinforcements against King Philip at Narraganset. (History of Salem, Sidney Perley p 89) The soldier claimant William Hinds was alive and residing in Marblehead, 1728  (List of grantees, heirs and later proprietors of Narraganset, now Amherst, NH, "Soldiers of King Philips War")

The baptisms of William's children are recorded at the First Congregational Church of Marblehead, MA (name is spelled Hinds, Hindes, Hines and Hine), and most of his grandchildren were also baptized there. (Vital Records of Marblehead, Mass p. 258-259, C.R.I)

1.. John Hine bapt 14 Feb 1682 married Constance Bennett, 25 Nov 1700 Marblehead; Abigail Rolls and Susanna Northy mentioned in the will of Capt. William Hinds were daughters of John and Constance Hinds.  The American Genealogist Vol. 38, pg 70-73 says that John Hinds died about 1714-1715 and that his widow, Constance Bennett, married John Pickworth on 31 May 1721. Constance Pickworth was granted administration of the estate of her former husband, John Haines, fisherman, 19 June 1723, Essex Probate 313:460. Daughters Abigail was baptized 11 June 1710 and Susanna was baptized 8 Nov 1713 at the First Congregation Church of Marblehead.  Essex Co. Deeds, 85:235     " 19 Apr 1740, Thomas Roles Jr. fisherman & wife Abigail, John Northy, glazier and wife Susanna, to William Hinde, shoreman, land given to them in the will of our father William Hinde, dec."  Susanna Hinds married John Northey, 2 Mar 1731/32. Abigail Hinds married Thomas Roles, 19 Aug 1729. Susanna Northey's second husband was Roger Vickery.  Many people  (based on the book written by Albert H. Hinds) claim a John Hinds of Bridgewater, Massachusetts, who married Hannah Shaw in 1709 at Bridgewater,  was the son of Capt. William Hinds and Abigail Ward.  This evidently is incorrect and unfortunately has been circulating since the book was published in 1899.
