CODE OF ETHICS:

This code of ethics is established to provide guidelines for members of the Central Kentucky Shetland Sheepdog Club in the course of breeding, selling, exhibiting and advertising Shetland sheepdogs and while participating in club functions. All members agree to abide by this code.

1. General:

  • Members comply with the regulations of the American Kennel Club and the American Shetland Sheepdog Association relating to the members activities.

  • Members become familiar with the official breed standard and use it as a guide in striving toward improvement of the breed.

  • Members maintain complete and accurate records on all dogs and dog transactions.

  • Members consider the betterment of the breed when engaged in any activities involving ownership, breeding, exhibiting, and selling of Shetland sheepdogs.

2. Ownership:

  • Members maintain high standards of health care and treatment for all dogs they own, whether maintained in residence or kennel, and shall give due regard to both housing and adequate socialization.

  • Members maintain high standards of animal control, and should duly respect the rights of others by practicing responsible dog ownership.

3. Breeding:

  • Betterment of the breed, not financial gain, is the goal when breeding.

  • Only purebred, registered dogs shall be bred or offered at stud.

  • Adequate health, breeding and pedigree records on breeding stock and resulting puppies must be maintained.

  • Breeding contracts must be in writing.

  • Breeding stock will be used only if they are physically sound, mature dogs of stable temperament. These characteristics are rarely, if ever, determined before the age of two for either males or females. A minimum breeding age of two is seriously recommended so that the breeders can determine with greater certainty that the parents are of good health and temperament.

  • Dogs or bitches with genetic defects should not be used for breeding.

  • Dogs known to be sterile, monorchid, or cryptorchid should not be offered at stud.

  • All breeding stock must be in good health, free from parasites, communicable disease and known genetic defaults.

  • Breeding stock is checked for genetic disease pertinent to this breed, including but not limited to hip dysplasia, eye disease, blood disorders, allergies, and heart disorders. Documents for tests such as OFA and CERF certifications should be available for both parents.

4. Sales:

  • Members shall not wholesale Shetland Sheepdogs to commercial establishments nor give them as prizes in contests.

  • Members shall sell breeding prospects to knowledgeable, ethical, and experienced persons and shall be willing to help educate and guide novices.

  • All Shetland sheepdogs shall be sold in good health and condition and with up-to-date, age-appropriate immunizations.

  • Sales contracts shall be in writing.

  • Sellers shall provide health records, pedigree, registration certificate, and any other pertinent data for each puppy sold, or a written explanation for the lack of any of these.

  • Prices for puppies and adults shall be based on individual quality, within a range established by general practices of reputable area breeders. Individual discretion in pricing may be exercised, but with respect for the welfare of the breed.

  • It is recommended that all dogs sold as pets should be sold with spay/neuter contracts.

  • It is recommended that any puppy sold as a show prospect that develops a congenital defect or disqualifying fault be:

    • Replaced by the breeder with another show prospect puppy, or

    • Returned to the breeder, and the money refunded, or

    • The buyer retains the dog, and the difference between the price paid and the price of pet puppies sold from the same or similar litters shall be refunded, upon proof of sterilization.

    • Members shall, at any time, accept the return of any dog or bitch their breeding program has produced and always help when relocation in needed.

5. Conduct:

  • Members of the club shall conduct themselves at all times in a manner that will reflect credit upon themselves, the club, and the breed, regardless of location or circumstance, but especially when attending dog club meetings or events, whether as an exhibitor or a spectator, and when representing the club to the public.

  • Members shall demonstrate good sportsmanship in all competitive events in which they participate.

  • Members shall assist in assuring that events supported by the club are conducted in an atmosphere of courtesy, fairness and good spirit.

6. Advertising:

All advertising shall be honest and straightforward in nature and shall not in any way be misrepresentative or fraudulent.
