Pre-reading (before going to the Internet site)

A. Brainstorm: in small groups the following vacation topics: Outdoor activities, Indoor activities, Problems that occur while on vacation, Things to pack, etc. Groups will report to the class.

B. Ask students choice question questions (Could be read in a language lab)

1. When would you want ski in Argentina?

      a. September
      b. December
      c. May
      d. July

2. What kind of fish would you catch in the lakes of Bariloche?

      a. Catfish
      b. Trout
      c. Sardines
      d. Bass

3. What type of weather would you not expect to find on Christmas day?

      a. Sunny and warm
      b. Rain
      c. Snow
      d. Fog

4. What would you not wear to go hiking?

      a. A jacket
      b. A backpack
      c. A pair of boot
      d. A tie

C. Model a power point / transparency presentation of a past vacation to a South American Country.

 

Scanning the text of the Internet site

Go to the Web site http://www.mercotour.com/sancarlosdebariloche/index.html and click on EXCURSIONES on the left hand side

 

A. Have students write down a list of cognates; then in pairs, have them select the important topics or themes that they can identify.

 

Careful reading of the text

Students would:

    A. Answer simple questions that do not require much analysis.
    B. Answer true or false questions (correcting the statements that are false).
    C. Answer multiple choice which would be the best meaning of this word
    D. Use Graphic Organizers such as charts or Venn diagram to contrast a cheap vs. a luxurious vacation.
    E. Answer Questions that require understanding & analysis:

What can kids do outdoors?

What can adults who do not like sports?

Application (using text)

Students would:

    A. Create a travel itinerary
    B. Write a Diary entry where did they went and what they did each day?
    C. Role-play with guided conversations (a travel agent and a tourist).
    D. Create a Jeopardy game based on the text.

 

Extension (Personalizing the information)

Students would:

    A. Create a brochure for a resort.
    B. 3-D project showing the resort and the surrounding attractions. A legend would be included that describes each site.
    C. Create a board game such as Candyland, but using vacation themes-à "vacationlandia" Include the following topics: clothing, transportation, costs, things to pack, problems that might occur, indoor activities, outdoor activities, etc.
    D. Create a Power point presentation of a past vacation
