Una Visita al Zoo de Madrid

 

In this activity we will be visiting the web site for the Zoo in Madrid, Spain.

Pre-reading

1. Brainstorm a list of animals and other attractions you think you might find at the Zoo.

2. What might be different than we would find at a zoo in the U.S.?

3. What are your 5 favorite animals?

1. What are the headings you find on the page?

2. What links are listed at the bottom of the page?

3. Which words are similar to English?

4. Which words do you not understand?

 

Careful Reading

1. Click on the "Zoológico" icon, the panda. Then click on "Animales". Find North America on the map and click. List 5 animals that you find (in Spanish) in Fauna americana.

 

 

2. Now go back to the previous page and click on "Mapa". Take the time to click on a couple of the sections and explore. Write down the name of 3 animals in Spanish in each section.

 

3. Using the copy of the map you were given, trace the route you would recommend to a friend.

4. Go back again to the first page and now click on "Información". Find the following information:

5. If you wish, you may now visit "Exhibiciones" and "Juegos" and play a game or you can continue below.

 

Post-reading

Application

With a partner, discuss in Spanish which section you liked the most and why? What is your favorite animal? ¿Qué animal te gusta más? ¿Por qué?

 

Extension

Your teacher may ask you to do one or more of the following in Spanish.

  1. Make a poster advertising the zoo. Include hours, prices and attractions.
  2. Create a spot for the radio or television advertising the zoo or a special event at the zoo. It can be a skit, a song, or a rap.
  3. Write a calendar for the zoo of special events that might occur during the month of your choice. How much do they cost? When do they take place?
  4. Write a press release for the birth of a baby animal (your choice).

  1. Ask students to brainstorm a list of animals and other attractions they would find at the zoo in Madrid. Are there any differences from what they would find at a zoo in the U.S.? Have them list their 5 favorite animals.
  2. Have students go to the web site: www.zoomadrid.com/index.php.3
  3. Have students list the headings and the links they find on the page.
  4. Have students list cognates and words they don't understand.
  5. Have students go to the page of animals, click on North America and list 5 animals in Spanish that they find there.
  6. Ask students to go back to the previous page and visit the section labeled "Mapa". Visiting the various sections, have them list 3 animals that they find in each section. Then, using the print out of the map, have them trace a route which they might suggest to a friend.
  7. Then visiting "Información", have students list the price, metro stop and hours in Spanish.
  8. If they wish, students can then visit "Exhibiciones" and "Juegos".
  9. With a partner, have students discuss in Spanish which section they liked best of the zoo and their favorite animal and why.
