Ornithopters emulating the natural flight of birds and insects

30 Years research work into man powered flight  I have for the past 30 years been developing a machine that will enable man to fly like a bird, my interest was kindled when my father took me to see the Cobham Flying Circus as a child.  Numerous attempts have led to various measures of success, Bell Bird actually took to the sky but the flight was not sufficiently long to qualify for the £100,000 prize offered for the first man to fly using his own strength. Expertise gathered over the years means that I am technically in an excellent position to make another bid at manned flight The cost of construction of such a machine would be prohibitive to me and this is why I am appealing for enthusiastic sponsors.

Emulateing the flight of birds and Insects. Work has involved the study of bird and insect flight, various options have been explored over the years. The first machine emulates the flight of the bird which I called Bell Bird 1. You will see from the picture below that I adopted the prone position on this chassis. It was found that a standing position was preferable, allowing more power to be transmitted via the pedals.

A great deal of development work went into subsequent machines which were called Bell Bird II and the ornithopter Coppelia which was named after the character in the ballet by Delibes. The project has continued to develop over the years, my research has led me to copy the mechanisms of insect flight. Four wings are used for lift which are operated in exactly the same way as a Dragonfly
Excellent opportunity to take part in breaking the last frontier This project will provide a sponsor with an excellent opportunity to take part in an attempt to break one of the final frontiers namely man powered flight. Plans for the construction of the new craft are well under way I have named her Musetta after the character in Puccini's La-Boheme. I feel the project would, as it has in the past attract a good deal of public interest. Perhaps television footage of the building program and my attempts at flight would be of interest to advertisers?

Help from enthusiastic volunteers needed. I live at Grimoldby which is a small village near the East Coast in Lincolnshire. Construction on the new aircraft is well under way the body is almost finished now and the 4 wings are ready for the covering.

Anyone interested in the project can contact Mick Brown        e-mail MJB2626@aol.com.

The Machine is almost built we need a lady pilot and a Business Sponsor for flight trials in the Summer      Details of the Ornithopter woman powered flight project.

Birdman In the News
The concept of man powered flight has always attracted public and media interest which has resulted in appearances both on television and radio
Flapping wings in action!
The Ornithopter principle of flight has been dismissed by many people since the development of fixed wing aircraft. Interestingly, new research into flapping flight is now underway across the world. We have provided links to other work including the 60 man Japan University Team.

History of Man Powered Flight
Alan has collected numerous pictures of other pioneers of man powered flight. You will find many interesting photographs of flying machines from across the world. The story starts with King Bladud the father of Shakespeare’s infamous King Leer who launched himself from the Tower of Apollo wearing wings made from chicken feathers.
