[Return to Top] ![]() Character Bios ![]() Duncan MacLeod
Discovered by a peasant woman and presented to the chieftain. At once he was adopted by the laird after the stillbirth of his son, over the protests of the midwife, who insisted he was a changeling. Duncan came to his first death during a battle with a neighboring clan over a border dispute at age 29 on 2 October 1622. He was subsequently banished from the Clan by his father after coming back from the dead. Wandered until 1624, then returned to Glenfinnan at his father's death and fought Kanwulf, Viking and Immortal, his father's killer. He left his father's claymore in Kanwulf's chest. Later met with clansman Connor MacLeod, who became his first mentor and taught him the Rules of the Game. Traveled widely during next several centuries throughout Europe, the Near East, Northern Africa, India, China, Japan, Mongolia and Russia. Usually in some military occupation; soldier, guardsman, etc. Fought in several wars, such as the Uprising with Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Napoleonic Wars. It was during the latter that he encountered the Immortal Darius in May, 1815. Eventually went to the New World aka America in 1816 after befriending Darius and absorbing some of his ideas about the futility of fighting in Mortal wars. Gradually worked his way West, at times living with Native Americans (nearly married a Lakota Sioux woman; prevented from doing so by her death at the hands of an Immortal scout attached to the U.S. Cavalry). Beginning in the 19th Century, began to seek different roles than that of a soldier during wars due to the influence of Darius. Instead attempted to help the side he felt was in the right, usually in ways other than combat. Worked with Abolitionists during the Civil War, helping slaves escape to the North. Fought with revolutionaries during Mexican revolt against Emperor Maximilian. Returned to Europe for both World Wars. Served as an ambulance driver in WWI in France. In Spain during the Spanish Civil War as a reporter. Known to be in Berlin, Germany in 1936, and London, England during the Blitz, apparently working in covert operations. Later fought with the French Resistance during WWII. After both wars returned to the States, with frequent trips to Europe. Was also in Cambodia during the Viet Nam War. For last few decades has alternated living in Seacouver and Paris.
Personality and Characteristics: Honours his heritage as heir to the laird of his Clan. Feels a duty to protect those who can not protect themselves. Although he will not normally back down from a fight, he tends not to seek out other Immortals for combat, but will hunt Immortals he feels are committing injustices. Attempted to stay out of the Game whilst Tessa was alive. A good friend, bad enemy. Cultured, broad range of interests; at home in almost any situation. Complex, kind, intelligent and extremely dangerous when required. Naturally, after 400-plus years is very cautious and tends not to trust easily. Makes friends among both Mortals and Immortals when the opportunity arises. Has served as mentor to several new Immortals, mostly recently Richie Ryan. (Briefly with new Immortals Michelle Webster and Claudia Jardine.) One of humanity’s best hopes for winning the Prize. [Return to Charater Bios] ![]()
Tessa Noel
Resume: Partner with MacLeod in antique dealership; talented sculptor; curator (Paris). History with Duncan MacLeod: Met Duncan MacLeod while she worked as a guide, when he boarded her tour boat in a hurry in Paris, France, 1980. She fell in love with him; three years later, he told her of his Immortality, but apparently not about the Gathering. Moved to Seacouver and opened up an antique shop with him, where they also lived. Strong, loving, intelligent and loyal. Not afraid to speak her mind. Independent. Welcomed Richie Ryan when he moved in with her and Duncan and formed big sister/surrogate mother relationship with him. Survived several encounters with Immortals trying to use threats to her to get at MacLeod. After years of living together, Duncan proposed and Tessa accepted. Shortly thereafter she was kidnapped by Pallin Wolf, a Hunter (renegade Watcher) who used this tactic to lure Immortals to their deaths. MacLeod tracked Wolf down with the help of a psychic (followed, against Duncan’s orders, by Richie), and killed him in a duel. After freeing Tessa, Duncan told Richie to take her home while he tried to find out more about Wolf from his computer. When going to MacLeod’s car, Tessa and Richie were confronted by a mugger who shot and killed them both in a robbery attempt. Duncan found Tessa dead on the street with Richie lying beside her. She is buried in Paris, France. Duncan still mourns her. [Return to Charater Bios] ![]() Richie Ryan
Befriended by Duncan MacLeod after Richie, then a street kid and thief, broke into the antique store to rob it and witnessed a confrontation between Duncan, Connor and Slan Quince. Sensing Richie was PreImmortal, Connor warned Duncan that he would need watching. Duncan and Tessa took Richie in and gave him a job as a clerk in the store. Richie, a foundling like all Immortals, enjoyed his first real home after living for years in a succession of foster homes since very young, and then on the streets. He became very close to both Duncan and Tessa, the closest thing to a family he’d known. Richie suffered his first ‘death’ at the hands of the same mugger who murdered Tessa, becoming Immortal at age 18 (19?) in late 1993. MacLeod became his mentor and trained him in the ways of Immortality until Richie received his first Quickening, that of the bounty hunter Mako. Richie went off on his own, meeting MacLeod again in Paris while being pursued by Immortal Martin Hyde, who was intent on framing Richie for murder, thus drawing out MacLeod. Subsequently, Richie alternated between Seacouver and Paris, much like MacLeod, until his very public death in a motorcycle racing accident in France, thus preventing him from visiting the country for several decades. He returned to the U.S., staying close to MacLeod until Duncan’s Dark Quickening. Upon encountering Richie at the dojo after the Dark Quickening, Duncan attacked him. Richie was saved from death only by Joe Dawson shooting MacLeod. Richie’s current whereabouts are unknown. Resume: Formerly - antique store clerk, manager of MacLeod’s dojo, motorcycle racer. Current Occupation - unknown. Personality and Characteristics: Goodhearted but impulsive; tends not to think before he leaps. (This could be a mere consequence of his relative youth; too soon to tell.) After several years of associating with MacLeod seems to be slowly acquiring more reflective habits. Has developed his own code of behavior patterned after MacLeod rather than falling back into habits learned while on the streets. Doesn’t seek out Immortals for duels but has taken a few more Quickenings. Has a rather hasty temper, tends to make quick judgments; emotional. Occasionally too trusting despite his background, another trait time will cure. Looks up to MacLeod, although is apt to get irritated by Duncan’s always knowing better due to several centuries more experience. An extremely loyal friend; even after MacLeod attempted to kill him under the influence of the Dark Quickening, Richie was unwilling to leave him until Dawson insisted. Joe Dawson
Occupation: Owns and runs a bar; occasional blues musician; high but unspecified position in the Watcher organization, deduced by his influence with others in that group, both in the U.S. and Europe. Duncan MacLeod’s Watcher for approximately 18 years at this time. History: After losing both legs in combat to a mine in the Viet Nam War in 1968, Joe was approached by Ian Bancroft for recruitment into the Watchers. Joe had been saved by his Sargeant, Andrew Cord, an Immortal. Ian explained about Immortals and the Watchers. Assigned to watch Duncan MacLeod circa 1978. Revealed himself to MacLeod when Duncan encountered him while tracking down the Hunters who had killed his friend, the Immortal Darius. Brother-in-law to James Horton (leader of the renegade Watchers known as the Hunters), Dawson was sympathetic to MacLeod’s anger at Darius’ death, but reluctant to believe that Horton was involved. When Duncan finally confronted Horton, Dawson tried to prevent them from fighting, to no avail. Subsequently MacLeod and Joe tentatively began a friendship in spite of the rules of the Watchers and Duncan’s misgivings. Horton resurfaced twice more, eventually trying to kill Joe during yet another plot to remove Duncan; Richie Ryan saved Joe’s life and Horton was definitively killed by MacLeod. Despite this, his friendship with Duncan endured and grew, unbeknownst to the Watcher organization, which has a strict no interference rule. After Kalas was killed by Duncan, Joe stayed in Paris then followed MacLeod to the Highlands. Returning to the US together, they encountered both Joe’s old Sargeant and savior, the Immortal Andrew Cord, and Charlie DeSalvo, the former owner and sometime partner in MacLeod’s dojo. Charlie was trying to kill Cord for betraying his lover Mara while fighting in the Balkans. Joe asked Duncan to mediate between the two. MacLeod tried, but ended up going after Cord when he killed Charlie. This caused a serious rift between the two, only mended when Amanda entered the picture. Things seemed normal again until Duncan’s Dark Quickening, when Joe saved Richie’s life by shooting MacLeod. No further contact is known at this time, nor if Joe’s position in the Watchers has been jeopardized by his interference. [Return to Charater Bios] ![]()
Amanda Darieux
First death was in England, 850 AD. During an epidemic, she stole from a ‘plague’ house, was spotted by the city Watch and clubbed over the head - whether for stealing or having been in a plague house is uncertain. She was rescued by the Immortal Rebecca Horne, who took her into her manor and served as her mentor. Amanda stayed with her several years until Rebecca told her it was time to be on her own. (Rebecca is the Immortal who had shards of a crystal called the Methuselah stone. It was rumored to increase the power of an Immortal, bestowing eternal life and invulnerability. Rebecca gave pieces to several of her protégés, one of whom later killed her. Amanda loaned hers - as a charm - to Duncan during his last fight with Kalas.) First encountered Duncan MacLeod in France, 1635, while in the company of Rebecca and true to form, she stole his purse, after arguing with Rebecca over who would take his pretty head. Has had several encounters with MacLeod during the ensuing centuries, usually involving him getting her out of some sort of trouble - again. She has frequently enjoyed an on-and-off love affair with him. On the other hand, she’s almost gotten him killed several times. Has lived with Duncan occasionally. Increased contact with him after Tessa’s death; has assisted him on occasion. Current location uncertain; but, she’ll be back. Occupation: Accomplished thief, acrobat, tightwire artist. Has worked in circuses; occasionally takes other jobs (such as a nightclub singer in 1936 Berlin, Germany; however, that was mostly a cover for gaining access to currency plates for counterfeiting). Usually sticks to illegal employment. Personality and Characteristics: A magnet for trouble. Seductive, unscrupulous, capricious, manipulative, devious, charming and unpredictable. A classic trickster. Lies frequently. Very little apparent conscience, but can then turn around and disarm by trying to help—which usually means trouble. Doesn’t seem to fight too often, but has definitely taken Quickenings, and managed to live over 1,000 years. Will use any and all wiles to get her way, and survive. She usually manages to charm MacLeod, despite his knowledge of her character and obvious wariness of any proposal she makes. However, lately she actually tried to go straight for a short time while living with him, so is truly very fond of him. This effort, though, isn’t likely to last for long. Seems to depend on Duncan for his stability and sense of honour. Maternal instincts and desires were revealed in a recent encounter between her, Duncan and her former protégé Kenny. However, her caring for MacLeod outweighed her feeling for Kenny, whom she threatened to kill if he harmed Duncan. [Return to Charater Bios] ![]() Darius
Darius was once one of the greatest generals of any age. About 1,500 years ago he started fighting his way from the Ural Mountains, swearing not to stop until he had conquered his way to the sea. However, at the gates of Paris he beheaded a holy man, the oldest living Immortal at the time. The power of that Immortal’s Quickening changed him, turning him from a fighter into a man of peace. He turned his armies back from Paris and relinquished his command, instead becoming a priest. He stayed in France for the rest of his life. Most of his time was spent on Holy Ground, but on occasion he would venture out to give aid during such times as the Napoleonic Wars. Darius was assisting the wounded on the battlefield when he met Duncan MacLeod. Darius continued to attend to his flock and his protégés, passing on his message of peace. Highly respected by both Mortal and Immortal students. In 1992 the Immortal Paul Grayson, formerly the second-in-command of Darius’ army all those centuries ago, came back into his life. He scorned Darius for stopping his conquest before reaching the sea when he could have ruled Europe. Now he was stalking a Mortal student of his, something he had done before with Darius’ students, both Mortals and Immortals. Darius sent Duncan a message warning him Grayson was coming to Seacouver after another of his Mortal students, Victor Paulus. MacLeod prevented Grayson from killing Paulus several times. Darius also was involved with MacLeod in dealing with the Immortals Xavier St. Cloud and Carlos Sendaro. Darius was apparently pragmatic enough to appreciate the fact that evil must sometimes be fought, not merely preached against. He was, after all, a great soldier at one time. Later that year, MacLeod was visited by another friend, Immortal Hugh Fitzcairn, who warned him about several mutual Immortal friends disappearing; no apparent duels with other Immortals, no sign of them anywhere. Shortly after Duncan was horrified to discover Darius dead in his church, killed on Holy Ground. Before leaving Paris, Duncan scattered Darius’ ashes into the River Seine, thus completing Darius’ journey to the sea begun so long ago. Resume: Originally a great general; Catholic priest for the last 1,500 years up to his death. Personality and Characteristics: Warm, friendly, gentle and concerned for all, even the most evil. Cared for and understood people; tried to help any way he could. Very intelligent and curious, logical mind, great insight. Even though mostly isolated on Holy Ground, very much aware of what was going on in the world. Philosopher. Strong convictions and dedication to his priesthood. Had a great interest in history, medicinal herbs, other plants and treatments; served as a physician on occasion. Patient with all. Great believer, preacher and advocate of peace. The sort of person who changes you for life when you meet them. Quiet sense of humor; enjoyed chess games with his friends. One of Duncan’s greatest, best-loved friends, and still sorely missed by him. Even during MacLeod’s Dark Quickening, he sought out Darius’ church for some sort of comfort. Methos a.k.a. Adam Pierson
Having been successful in hiding from Immortals and Watchers alike for centuries, to most Immortals Methos is a myth. Little is known about Methos’ history in the last 5,000 years. Methos himself admitted to Duncan that he didn’t remember much back before that time, when his first Quickening had been taken. Methos is extremely close-mouthed about his history (which is radically understating the case). However, he spent time in both ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome (not surprisingly). What is known to precious few is that for several years he has been masquerading as a Watcher - mild-mannered Adam Pierson, researching the Methos legend. While hunting Kalas (who was hunting Methos) Joe Dawson directed Duncan to Adam, as the person working on the Methos Chronicle. MacLeod was stunned upon meeting Pierson to be facing another Immortal - who casually tossed him a beer. Methos was not only friendly, but later tried to sacrifice himself by goading Duncan into fighting him after Methos had escaped a fight with Kalas. He planned to have MacLeod take his Quickening, thus making Duncan strong enough to defeat Kalas. Methos had not fought a duel (according to him) since taking his last head, and didn’t want his Quickening to go to Kalas. MacLeod, however, refused once he realized what was happening. Methos saw to it that Kalas was arrested and then disappeared from his flat - with the Methos Chronicle. MacLeod revealed to Dawson that Adam was Methos; Joe has kept this information from the Watchers. Methos reappeared later to team up with Duncan, Joe and Amanda to try and prevent the Watcher database CD from being revealed to the media by the widow of one of the Watchers Kalas had killed. Kalas managed to obtain the CD, and threatened to put it on the Internet if Duncan didn’t agree to a duel. In the end Duncan fought Kalas, and won; during the ensuing massive Quickening, the Watcher CD Kalas had was fortuitously destroyed. Later that year Methos suddenly turned up in Seacouver to inform MacLeod that an old lover of his, Kristin Gilles, was in town. In the end, Methos took her head when Duncan couldn’t, thus gaining his first Quickening in two centuries. Methos stayed in the U.S. for a time, until meeting a Mortal woman working at Joe’s tavern, Alexa Bond, and falling in love with her. Although she had only a year or so to live, he left with her to travel as much of the world as they could before she died. He returned to Paris, however, when Duncan was overwhelmed by his Dark Quickening. During this time Methos made it plain that he considered Duncan one of the best of the Immortals, seemingly hoping that MacLeod would be the one to win the Prize. He managed to convince Duncan to go to an ancient holy spring, possibly magic, where he was cured. Methos then left, to return to Alexa. Occupation: Formerly - unknown. Currently a Watcher researcher. Personality and Characteristics: Self-described as just a guy. Shows a certain wry wit on occasion, quirky sense of humor. Can seem a little shy, doesn’t stand out in a crowd. Casual and unassuming. Certainly doesn’t put on airs; beer seems to be his favourite tipple. Outwardly open and friendly. All this may just be protective colouration, as after 5,000 years he’s definitely learned how to adapt and conceal himself. Presumably cautious, extremely wary, survival oriented and reluctant to trust anyone, no matter what he says to the contrary. Matters of honour seem largely unimportant, except when interacting with friends; very pragmatic in matters of survival. Appears concerned over Duncan’s survival, although his true motives are unknown. Will offer advice, but isn’t surprised when it isn’t taken. Mostly displays patience with younger Immortals (i.e., all of them), but does become impatient after several tries at explaining his reasoning. Although not a ladies’ man ... he CAN do cute. Obviously has great insight into emotions and motivations after living millennia. Also, his treatment of Alexa shows kindness and concern, not to mention a certain romantic side. Judging by his apartment in Paris before he abandoned it, has excellent taste but tends to play that down; not obviously a culture maven. Apparently into technology; he’s the one that suggested the Watcher database be put on CD. Looks like he enjoys music a lot; seen several times wearing a Walkman (and we know he likes Queen and Springsteen). Other than these outward characteristics, his true nature is not known by anyone.
