History
The historic Coal Sheds on the
former Mare Island Naval Shipyard became art studios in April 1999. For
more information on the past, click the photo. Presently, the 8,000 sq.
ft building provides creative work areas for 15 professional artists.
The building is spacious, the work areas giving into a generous 30-foot
high open space. The artists work in a variety of medias: wood & metalworking,
photography, sculpture, painting and printmaking. Each has their own work
area, and shares gallery and reception areas in common. It is hoped
this new endeavor will serve as an example for the future use for the historic
shipyard.
