CURRENT FEATURE (A new photo feature uploaded here as of 7/13/2004):

She's a Grand Old Flag, a High-Flying Flag..."Patriotic Antique VWs on Parade in New Hampshire, Independence Day 2004" - Photos by Jim Mayo

Our long-time Connecticut antique VW hobby friend Jim Mayo, who these days is very involved with the Type 3 scene (specifically with his super-nice 1971 Squareback, see: http://members.aol.com/foxcraft/MoreT3Imgs.html#JIM), nevertheless still keeps his eyes open (& camera ready) for items of old VW interest. In a broadcast e-mail message entitled "Happy Belated 4th....", dated 7/11/2004, Jim wrote:

"...Thought you would appreciate a couple of the cars in the parade we saw in New Hampshire over the 4th..."

Talk about fun photos! We wrote back thanking Jim, and in a response mailed the next day to a follow-up question I asked him about the location and any other known details about the vehicles shown in the photos, Jim wrote:

"...Both VWs were in the small Alton, N.H. parade which is really just a neighborhood type of thing. Don't know any names unfortunately..."

Goodness knows, we are big fans of putting old VWs in patriotic local parades, and try do do so whenever possible (speaking for ourselves, the latest for us was the Branford, CT Memorial Day Parade, Monday May 31, 2004, see: http://members.aol.com/cgearannex/BfdMemPrd04.html).

Jim Mayo photo from Alton, NH 4th of July Parade, 2004, Deserter BuggyThe shots that Jim forwarded very clearly demonstrate that there are other folks out there who really "get into the partriotic spirit" with their old VWs, and aren't afraid to show it! I've never been to Alton, NH before, and frankly had to look it up to figure out where it was; it sure looks to be in a beautiful region there, right at the edge of Lake Winnipesaukee, in about the east-central part of the state (most of my "New Hamshire knowledge" being confined to the south-western part of the state, due to many trips to see our buddy Gordi Davis at 4ever4, formerly based in Marlow, now located just south of Keene, I think, in Swanzey, see: http://www.4evr4-vw-aircl-allvans.com/ - well, that, plus driving through Portsmouth on I-95, on our way to Maine...).

So, without further delay, let's get into Jim's fine 4th of July "old VW action photos!"

THE IMAGE AT THE RIGHT Jim Labeled as a Deserter Dune Buggy. Not being the most knowledgeable-about-dune buggies, I did an internet search and found the Deserter Owners Group (a.k.a.: "The DOG House"; see: http://www.geocities.com/deserterownersgroup/), and viewing their images, I'd estimate this very slick-looking vehicle looks to be a "Deserter GT" (quoting from the site: "...Originally manufactured in Marblehead, MA by Dearborn Automotive Corp..." - how cool is that?!). That looks to be one happy bunch riding in the Deserter! Good job with flag-waving too!

BELOW: Demonstrating the antique VW Type II's positively impressive capability for displaying patriotic bunting, here's another of Jim's shots from the Alton, NH 4th of July parade! Unfortunately I am not a good judge of antique Type IIs either, and especially those that have their turn signals covered up--so, beyond being able to reasonably say that it's a "'post-'barndoor' and 'pre-1968' VW Pickup," I can't add too much else here... It sure looks to be a one beautiful pickup, though!!

BELOW: And here is one more shot of the Patriotic Pickup, this time showing that, like the Deserter, it too had a happy bunch of folks enjoying the experience!

We wish to once again sincerely thank Jim Mayo for sharing these great photos!
