COMPOSERS, INC

New American Music

COMPOSERS, INC., a not-for-profit arts organization, was formed in 1984 as an advocate for the music of living American composers.

Through its concert series and other activities, COMPOSERS. INC. seeks to broaden public awareness of the uniquely valuable contributions of American composers to our culture by providing a highly visible, nationally-recognized forum for their work.

Through its sponsorship of the Lee Ettelson Composers Award , a national competition open to all U.S. composers, COMPOSERS, INC. seeks to recognize and reward exceptional creative achievement in the composition of new chamber music.

Concert Series

COMPOSERS, INC. is directed by five Bay Area composers, and presents an annual concert series of large and small chamber and solo works in the Green Room in San Francisco. Since its founding, COMPOSERS, INC. has presented over two hundred new works by American composers from every region of the United States, with special emphasis on those from California and the Bay Area.

The organization is known for presenting performances of the highest quality, and the series is recognized nationally by composers and performers alike.

A recent review of one concert stated: "COMPOSERS, INC. is rapidly becoming . . . the most satisfying new music experience in the Bay Area." (San Francisco Examiner).

Since COMPOSERS, INC. is not a fixed ensemble of performers, each program offers a wide variety of instrumentation, complementing the stylistic diversity which is our trademark. Approximately sixty distinguished performers appear each season, drawn largely from the ranks of the San Francisco Symphony and Opera Orchestras. In addition to the excellent local musicians we present, we have provided San Francisco debuts for such ensembles as the internationally acclaimed Alexander String Quartet, Aequalis (MA), Flute Force (NY), Monticello Trio (VA), and others.

The large, enthusiastic concert audiences are as diverse as the programs--musicians, composers, students and music lovers of all stripes make up COMPOSERS, INC.'s concert audience - drawn by the excellence of the performances and the electrifying atmosphere in the Green Room.

Everyone agrees - there is a sense of immediacy and vitality at COMPOSERS, INC. that is rare among new music concert series.

Lee Ettelson Composers Award

A national competition open to all U.S. composers, the Lee Ettelson Composers Award recognizes outstanding achievement in the creation of new chamber works with cash awards and performances. It is the largest and best recognized award offered by any new music organization in the Western United States. Supported by an endowment from the family of Lee Ettelson, journalist, former managing editor of the San Francisco Examiner, and patron of the arts, this award is offered annually in a blind-judged competition to the composer of the best chamber work submitted from among more than 250 entries each year.

Student Outreach

COMPOSERS, INC. believes strongly in the need to reach a broader and more diverse audience than is traditionally associated with contemporary music. The Student Outreach Program is designed to bring students ranging in age from 12 through college-age out of the classroom and into the concert hall to experience first-hand the live impact of the best music of this time and place.

Over 2,500 students representing California's ethnically and economically diverse population have gained access to an aspect of modern culture they might otherwise have never experienced, and with gratifying results - more than half of the students choose to return again.

COMPOSERS, INC. has brought a much-needed "breath of fresh air" (S.F. Chronicle) to the world of new music.
