News Release for Marsden Wagner's Visit to Kentucky

Kentucky Alliance for the Advancement of Midwifery

Marsden Wagner, MD, MSPH, former Regional Officer for Women's and Children's Health, World Health Organization, and now an international spokesperson for the midwifery model of care, will be in Kentucky on Tuesday, June 10. His itinerary follows:

8:00 a.m. Dr. Wagner will present, "Is current obstetric practice in Kentucky and the US evidence based?" at University of Kentucky OB/GYN Grand Rounds. University of Kentucky Hospital, 3rd floor (MN363).

10:30 a.m. meeting with Secretary John Morse, Cabinet for Public Health, to discuss midwifery needs in Kentucky. See attached Executive Summary.

2:30 p.m. Press Conference, Forum, Jefferson County Health Department, 400 East Gray Street. Dr. Wagner will present Kentucky birth statistics, a comparison of childbirth options in Kentucky to other states and countries, and a summary of the meeting with Secretary Morse.

7:00 p.m. Community Meeting, Guest Speaker, Marsden Wagner, MD, MSPH, "Whose birth is it anyway? -- More midwives and greater freedom in Kentucky's maternity care," First Unitarian Church, 809 S. 4th St., Louisville.

Dr. Wagner is the author of over 80 scientific papers and 5 scientific books published in English, German, French, Spanish, Russian, Italian, Japanese and Danish, including the book, Pursuing the Birth Machine, the search for appropriate birth technology. His honors and awards include Professional Achievement Award, UCLA School of Medicine and Alumnus of the Year, UCLA School of Medicine (1995)
