About CoPPs, U.S.A.

CoPPs, U.S.A. was organized amidst the largest lobbying war in our history. The war involves the Clinton Administration and many special interest groups in health insurance, hospital and other sectors. They spent 100 million dollars on advertisement and other public campaigns. They gave an additional 46 million dollars to the Congressional Campaign Funds. In health care reform, the American public is confused by distorted information and various illogical proposals presented to them. The American people, other than a group of about 100,000 people in the health care business, has begun to recognize the shrinking health care insurance coverage and the rapidly growing health care cost. The public wants reforms in the health care system, but they neither recognize problems in the system nor have solutions for the system. They are skeptical of ill-considered sweeping changes in the system with too many nonviable promises. They are especially troubled by the funding for those promised benefits. One thing is very clear to the American public: they will have to foot the bill, under either government mandate or employer mandate.

A majority of the American people does not trust our government in handling issues, which are essential to every American's daily life, such as health care. They want to contain the health care cost, and retain quality care, individual choice and affordable accessibility. But how can the public achieve these goals without knowing the problems and solutions in this chaotic system?

A group of concerned citizens has realized that the health care system will be destroyed unless the public and physicians jointly initiate sensible health care reform for this nation. We founded the Coalition of the Public and Physicians for Sensible Health Care Reform, U.S.A. in May 1994, which is directed by an uncompensated voluntary board and committees. Every penny from your support will be strictly used for educating the public about flaws in the current system and the logic behind our reform plan for the system. Because the timing was critical, we placed a full-page advertisement in The Virginian-Pilot and the Ledger-Star on August 2, 1994, urging American voters to join us in stopping Congress from acting on any health care reform proposal before CoPPs, U.S.A. completes its own reform plan. We also sent reprints of this advertisement with a letter to members of the Congress warning them that their actions will be judged by the American public in November 1994, 1996 and 1998. As of this newsletter, Congress has officially abandoned the idea of pushing for health care reform legislation in 1994. Passing a piece of bad legislation is much worse than passing none. We welcome this great news with temporary relief, but we must now gear ourselves up to push even harder for sensible health care reform in 1995.
