The Math & Logic Contests are open to teams of students in grades
two, three, four, five or six. There are separate contests for each grade
level. Teams from any school may participate. The contests are designed
for participation by all students in a grade level from the participating
schools.
During the 1998-99 school year over 20,000 students from more than 100 schools
participated. Schools from 17 states were involved. Public, private, church,
and charter schools participated.
For students in grades 4, 5, and 6, there are five contests held during the school year: October, November, January, February, and March. The second and third grade contests are a two-day event in late February. Contest materials are sent to teachers shortly before each contest. Students then work cooperatively in teams of three to solve a set of problems during a 40-minute session. Teachers score the contest and send the scores of their school's top three teams to Mike Coulter Publications. Certificates, printed with the students' names from these three teams, are mailed back to the school after each contest. At the end of the fifth contest (for grades 4, 5, and 6) certificates or trophies are sent to the top teams from each school. Additional certificates are presented to the top teams from each grade level throughout the region or country.
The problems on each contest range from those that most students in the
grade level should be able to solve independently to complex, multi-step
problems that require higher level thinking. Basic story problems, patterns,
money, geometry, number concepts, and puzzles are included.
The basic cost for grades 4, 5, or 6 for the 1999-2000 school year is
$64.50. This price includes blackline contest masters and teachers' pages
for each of the five contests, monthly certificates for members of the top
three teams at each school, newsletters reporting scores from schools around
the country, certificates for members of the schools top three teams at
the end of the year and for any team that scores among the best in their
geographic region.
The basic cost for the second or third grade contests is just $24.50. This

February 2000, a sample contest page, certificates for each member of each
school's top three teams, national scoring report, certificates for any
