Referees must
determine if it appears that the intention of the offensive player was to
“dink” the ball. If so, one of
the legal methods of dinking the ball must be used.
A
set ball may drop lightly over the net. If the setting action was used,
the "hit" is not technically a dink, but it is a legal play.
A “mis-hit”
ball is not a “dink”, as there is no intention to drop the ball lightly over
the net.
A ball that drops more than 2-3 feet from the
net is likewise not a “dink”. In
this situation, the ball may be hit with an open hand as long as there is no
“carry”, "push" or “throw” involved.
