Gravity's Rainbow
For years, it was Virginia's most notable stealth disc. Fighting Gravity's major label debut should have been floating through national record stores years ago. Instead, business tangles kept it lurking in the shadows, a disc without a home. That's all history now, though. "You and Everybody Else" - a well-crafted, horn-flavored melodic feast - is finally a reality. Released this week, the disc represents the apex of a 12-year climb for the Richmond-based band. And it signals the beginning of a new phase in Fighting Gravity's career. The group recently signed on with a national booking agency that promises to get it opening gigs for Cowboy Mouth, Blues Traveler- even Aerosmith. "With a new major label disc, the goal is to get the music in front of as many people as possible - which is why we're playing Mitty's, " kidded bassist David Peterson at the Newport News club earlier this week. Peterson explained that while the group is trying to score high-profile shows, it's also showing lots of appreciation to longtime fans. That was the reason for Tuesday's record release party at Mitty's, as well as a show starting 4 p.m. Saturday at Mayo Island in Richmond. The group will be making stops along the Southeast circuit, giving Fighting Gravity loyalists a chance to celebrate the new release.Mercury , the label issuing "You and Everybody Else," isn't marketing the disc with a wave of hype. Manager Mike Jones says the strategy is to build on the groups' solid base in Virgina and the Carolinas. As with the Dave Matthews Band, the idea is to nurture a group with staying power - instead of risking the one-hit wonder syndrome. "These guys are in it for the long haul" says Jones.
