 Major Russell E. Alger (1836-1907)

 Major in the 2nd Michigan Cavalry, later the colonel of the 5th

 Michigan Cavalry, governer of Michigan (1885-1887), US Secretary of

War, 1897-99, US Senator from Mich. 1902-1907. He died in Washington D.C. Jan.

24, 1907, and is buried at Elmwood Cemetery, Detroit , Michigan.

Alger County, Michigan is named for him.
