Use an average size set of horns for the area that you are hunting. Camo yourself out if you are hunting from the ground. And use all scent precautions that you would use for bow hunting.
Pick out an area that shows good Buck signs, such as a rub line or a scrape line. Find a spot that will conseal you but, an area that you can see around for at least thirty yards. Deer are very sneaky and if they see you first, they may spook and run off.
Hunt close to some brush that you can shake and make some noise with while you rattle. This makes the fight sound more realistic. Also, paw the ground with the horns to immitate the stomping of deer hoofs.
I have had some good success rattling from deer stands too.
Here are some more tips to use while rattling (Practice at home before your hunt if you are new to this). The use of a grunt call can be lethal also. Before rattling, it is a good idea to try your grunt call first. Grunt a couple of times and then wait about five minutes. If there is a Buck nearby, he will most likely come. If you see a deer coming, stop grunting. Let him come in close for a good shot. If he turns, then grunt again to get his attention and keep him coming.
If no deer come within 20-30 minutes, grunt with three aggressive grunts and wait about 10 seconds, then rattle. Clash the horns together hard for the first strike, then mesh them together, finger locking the tines. Tickle them in an aggressive manner for about 10-15 seconds, then fling the antlers apart and wait for 5-10 minutes. Repeat the process again in the same manner after 5-10 minutes. Only do this up to three times. If no deer come, move to another location and try again.
Rattling is a tactic that works best during the rut. I have found that the best time of the day is around 7:00 AM to 12 noon, and about an hour before dark.
Be prepared for the shot. I have been caught handicapped with the horns still in my hands and the deer looking in my direction. Be fully alert! If you hunt with a partner, one person should rattle and the other person be ready with the gun or bow to take the shot.
Only alot of time spent in the woods will make you a good hunter. You learn by your mistakes.
Try rattleing for some explosive results.
