According to the 1861 census John was born in Kickley!, Cheshire which I cannot find on any map. On the 1871 census he was born in Hipaley, Worcestershire which I again cannot find on any map.
The marriage of John & Rachel was witnessed by Rebecca & Joseph Field. The left their mark on the register.

The witnesses at the wedding were Annie Hill and Harry Winters. The certificate was not signed, by either Joseph or Gertrude.
Letter from Birmingham City Council shows Florence, Arthur and Joyce living as a family at The Bungalow, Woodcock Lane, Acocks Green. This letter also shows Joseph as a labourer at M & B Cape Hill. He earned £2. 12s. 6d (£2 63.5p). He was in arrears of Board/Lodgings.
5/7/1926 he was sentenced to 21 days hard labour for 25 Guineas arrears.
7/9/1926 He was allowed one month to make arrangements for the family who were in Western Road. He paid £1 to the Maintenance Officer in Newtown Street.
22/7/1927 He states that he will be responsible for the children.

At 23 Stour Street in 1924, lived a William Henry Parker, and Mary Elizabeth Parker. There is no mention of Gertrude on this Electoral Roll. It is a strange coincidence that according to Gertrudes marriage certificate her father is noted as William Henry Ely at the same address.
I cannot find any trace of Gertrudes birth. I can however find a Gertrude Hands. She was born in abt 1902 to Mary Elizabeth Hands who was married to William Henry Parker Abt. 1901. So how did they all become Ely's.
If this is the same Gertrude then she was born out of wedlock as Mary Elizabeth Hands had not yet married William Henry Parker
The marriage certificate shows William Henry Ely as deceased but William Henry Parker is listed on the electoral roll for 1924!
17/5/1929 Discharged from Western Road, with 3 children. Arthur and Joyce returned the following day after being left in a shop in Acocks Green.
28/10/1930 Gertrude insists she is living at home and has worked at the BAMP restaurant for 13 months. She denies that she is seeing another man!
Maternal Grandmother noted as Mrs Pamar I think that this is either Taylor, or Parker.
