I’m often amazed at how little thought some parents put into the toys they purchase for their kids. I’ve been an educator for over 13 years now, and whenever I hear a parent worried that his or her child may have ADHD, I think, “Well, take away his Game Boy!” I have done an informal show of hands in many classes as to how many kids had Game Boys or Nintendos. Can you guess which kids always had their hands up? I'll bet you can! How can parents condone a toy that stimulates a child's body into producing mass amounts of adrenaline in order to play a game effectively? Is it any wonder that children consequently need Ritalin or other stimulants to think effectively during school?

Children’s brains are developing, and they develop through experience. I have selected the categories of toys below to help you to make wise toy purchases for your child. I believe in stimulating the intelligences in order to provide children with the widest range of experiences. When a child is young, he or she will accept just about any experience; as they mature, they start to develop preferences. But you can still work with these preferences to provide a solid foundation for your child. There are many alternatives to Game Boy that are much more beneficial!

I have also included some software selections. These are educational, as well. Remember, you are the most important teacher that your child will ever have, and the best teachers are the ones who orchestrate the magic of learning for their students.
