Outlined against a vivid tropical sunset as the QE2 completes her transit,
the graceful Bridge of Americas majestically spans the Panama Canal at
the Pacific entrance to the 90-year-old waterway.
Originally named after Maurice H. Thatcher, the last surviving member of the Isthmian
Canal Commission. The Bridge of Americas rises 384ft above the Canal and clears the water
by 201ft at mean high tide. The Bridge is 5,425ft in length and the total
cost of construction was $20 million.
