Highways of Bergen County, New Jersey

These pages outline the various county roads in Bergen County, New Jersey, along with the state highways that are completely or partially within the county.

Most Bergen County roads have two-digit numbers. Even numbers generally denote east-west roads, with the numbers increasing as you go north. Odd numbers generally denote north-south roads, with the numbers increasing as you go west. There are a few exceptions to the rule of cardinal direction, such as CR 62. The county has a few three-digit numbers; many of these do not follow the rule of cardinal direction. At one time, there was a designation of roads numbered 2 through 21 which overlaid existing numbers and were often signed instead of the root number; these have been officially discontinued, although some signs still exist.

There are also quite a few S routes, with S meaning “spur”; these roads generally intersect their parent at some point (or they used to before the parent became a state highway or 500 route). Spurs follow no rule of cardinal direction.

Inventories are usually from south to north or west to east; exceptions are noted.

Also included here are the various state highways that run in Bergen County. These range from Interstate highways to two-lane state roads that sometimes also bear county markers.

The source for most of these route logs is the NJ Department of Transportation’s Straight Line Diagrams. These are supplemented by auxiliary maps and personal observations.

For the sake of manageability, I have listed on each route log only the following features:

By convention, stuff (town names, road names, etc.) on the left side of the road is in (parentheses), while stuff on the right side is in [square brackets]. This way, if you’re driving down the road in the direction of inventory (usually west to east or south to north), the indications line up with the way you’re facing.

Many thanks to Dan Moraseski (whose New Jersey highway logs are a valuable resource) for ideas and inspiration.
