Second Generation

*Dr. Samuel THOMPSON (Am. Rev.) was born in 1765 in (probably) Granville County, North Carolina. He died in 1843 in San Augustine County, Republic of Texas.

The following biography is from "The Handbook of Texas Online" and was contributed by Essie Walton Martin:

THOMPSON, SAMUEL (1765-1843). Samuel Thompson, physician, participant in the Revolutionary War, and alcalde of San Augustine Municipality, Texas, was born in 1765, the son of George Thompson of England. He was a resident of the Spartanburg District of South Carolina when he enlisted for service in the American Revolution in 1778 or 1779, at the age of thirteen or fourteen, under Capt. Joseph Wofford. He was an express carrier and wagoner and fought in the battle of Cowpens. Thompson married Precius [sic] Wofford after the war, and the couple owned three slaves. They sailed with other members of the Thompson family to Coahuila and Texas in 1826. Dr. Thompson is listed in Stephen F. Austin's register of families, and the first census of Texas enrolled him as a physician owning eighteen slaves. In 1834 and 1835 Thompson was alcalde ( the chief administrative and judicial officer of a Spanish town) in San Augustine. Thompson Academy was founded about 1839. The institution, about seven miles east of San Augustine, was donated by Thompson and named after him. He died in 1843 in San Augustine County and was buried on the original Thompson settlement. [Editorial Note - It should be noted that he did not marry the daughter of his Captain, Joseph Wofford, but rather the daughter of Joseph's brother Benjamin, who was a Tory during the Revolutionary War.]

Tracing Samuel thru the census record, we find that he lived in Spartanburg County in the 96th District of South Carolina in 1790 (where his household consuisted of three males over 16, two males under 16, two females, and one slave), in Warren County, Kentucky in 1800 and 1810 (where his 1810 household consisted of consisted of two males 10-15, one male over 45, a female under 10, a female 26-44 and a female over 45), and the Sabine District of the Mexican territory of Texas in 1835 (where his household consisted of himself, Precious, and 18 slaves). In the 1835 census he is identified as a doctor, farmer, and Catholic. He has not been located in the 1820 census, but he possibly lived in Huntsville in Madison County in the Mississippi territory of Alabama, along with his Wofford in-laws. At least two of his children were born in Georgia so we know that he lived there for for a while around 1787 and 1795.

Samuel married Precious WOFFORD daughter of Benjamin WOFFORD ( A TORY).) and Mary LLEWELLYN. Precious was born about 1767 in (Old) Berkeley County, South Carolina. She died after 1835 in Republic of Texas.

Precious is identified as a Baptist in the 1835 Sabine district census.
