DARTMOOR THE WILDEST LAND
Welcome to my web page. As you can see it is called ‘Dartmoor the Wildest Land’. This is not a romantic description because Dartmoor truly is a ‘wild land’ that down through the ages has refused to be tamed by the hand of man. It has allowed some of its riches to be taken in the form of tin, peat and wood but as far as cultivation is concerned it has proven untameable. It has been called ‘the last remaining wilderness of southern Britain’ and is a land where you can still find solitude if you are prepared to walk beyond the usual tourist attractions. Go 3 miles out from any crowded car park and you will be lucky to meet a living soul.
It is a place you will either passionately love or hate, I personally do not think there is any halfway house. Because if you love it and are at peace walking there on your own then you are at peace with yourself. There you will meet the harshest of conditions that will turn it into a utterly desolate place but in contrast you will see it bathed in summer sun when it takes on a breathtaking mantle of life. No matter what the conditions the colours are so diverse it truly demonstrates the magnificence of natures paint palette as the seasons change.
The diversity of interests concerning Dartmoor are vast. No matter where your interests lie there is some part of Dartmoor that will easily accommodate them, be it walking, cycling, horse riding, rock climbing, drawing, letterboxing, historical interest, botany, archaeology, geology etc - this list is endless.
The intention of this site is to share some of the differing aspects of Dartmoor that I enjoy. You will find a page on some of the legends that have lasted since the dawn of time. Another section covers the hobby of letterboxing. On the lighter side and I stress the lighter side you will find the Dartmoor Bugle a very tongue in cheek magazine looking at the walkers and walking life of Dartmoor, Finally there is a section on a book I have had published about the old stone crosses of Dartmoor.
I hope you enjoy visiting this site and any comments or questions are always welcomed. I do intend on adding various other sections as time allows but it is certainly my intention to regularly update the pages so please look back from time to time.
