Here's part of a story that ran a few years ago in the Metro Detroit Magazine: By Maureen McGerty / Special to The Detroit News WATERLOO -- If you love the mental challenges of pool and chess, but you'd like to pick up a new outdoor pursuit as the weather warms up, consider croquet. This reputedly genteel game can get really competitive, as you'll discover when the Waterloo Croquet Club members deliver wicked shots on its court. Anyone is welcome to watch. "It's cutthroat," says Bill Darwin II, who founded WACA with his parents, Bill Sr. and JoAnne, in 1994. "You have no friends in croquet." The game that's played among clubs in Michigan generally follows rules set by the United States Croquet Association. "What we play is not ordinary back yard croquet," Darwin says. "What people play in their back yards is called nine-wicket. The configuration of the court is different. We play American six-wicket. It's more strategic. There's offensive and defensive play." |
